Here are my stats:

B.S. Industrial Engineering from Rutgers
G.P.A. 3.98

GMAT 680

Work Experience: 4 years at a large IT Consulting company with lots of leadership experience

I should get good recommendations.

Do you think I have a legitimate shot at Columbia and NYU?

Also, I'm an asian male; so, I think that might hurt me a little.

Do you think I need to raise my GMAT score to stand a realistic chance at these schools?

Hi,

The basic ingredients of your application sound pretty strong-

College GPA at the far right tail of the distribution at NYU and at Columbia from a known university
Four years work experience
GMAT within about one SEM at both schools

As long as you do not prejudice any other element of the application, you might want to consider retaking the GMAT. Nonetheless, I think that many would agree that the key variable at this point is how you market and differentiate your skills and experiences. These "soft" or "difficult to quantify" elements of your application such as leadership are now the most salient.

Your current GMAT score won't keep you out of those schools, but if you have enough time to take it again and believe that you stand a good chance of doing better, then go ahead.

I urge you to avoid studying for the GMAT and working on the rest of your app at the same time, though. If you take the GMAT again, do it ASAP (once you're ready, naturally), get it out of the way, and then move on to the rest of your application. For applicants who try to cram for the GMAT while simultaneously working on their essays and managing their recommenders (which can take A LOT of effort!), the GMAT can end up being a distraction.

Thanks for the fast feedback guys!

I have the next week or so off from work; so, I think I may take the test again next Wednesday.

Hopefully, I can make a lasting impression on the other parts of my application to get into my two choices.

I retook the GMAT yesterday and scored a 730!!!

Hopefully, this will improve my chances with both these schools.... :-D

Congrats! Now officially forget about the GMAT and move on to the rest of your app. :-)

I was in NYC last week and happened to be by NYU's campus. What a great part of town.
