Yale MBA Essay for 2022-2023 [#permalink]

FROM Stacy Blackman Consulting Blog: Yale MBA Essay for 2022-2023

Is the Yale School of Management on your list of target MBA programs? Then get ready to hit the ground running. The Yale MBA essay for the 2022-2023 admissions season has been confirmed. Reapplicants should note that it remains unchanged from last year’s prompt.

Required Yale MBA Essay
Describe the biggest commitment you have ever made. (500 words)

This is the sixth year that Yale SOM has asked this question. In the past, Assistant Dean for Admissions Bruce DelMonico has explained that it evolved from a conversation with Professor of Organizational Behavior Amy Wrzesniewski.  Professor Wrzesniewski noted, “Reading about future plans is helpful, but actions speak louder than words.”

“My advice on how to approach the essay is also similar to what I’ve said in past years,” DelMonico wrote in a prior blog post. “The Admissions Committee cares less about the commitment you choose and more about the behaviors surrounding the commitment.

You can choose a commitment from either your personal or work life—and each year there are many excellent essays on varied topics—but what makes them all great is that we come away learning something new about you as a person that helps us understand your values and motivations.”

DelMonico’s blog post linked above is filled with tips for using the application to tell your story. Don’t miss his advice about recommendation letters, the behavioral assessment, and more.

Additionally, you can check out this video with essay guidance from Laurel Grodman, Managing Director of Admissions, Analytics and Evaluation. “Be genuine in your response,” she advises. “We are asking you for your biggest commitment, which means you will be writing about something very important to you.”

Choose the Right Kind of Conversation Starters [#permalink]
Expert Reply
FROM Stacy Blackman Consulting Blog: Choose the Right Kind of Conversation Starters

“FRESH IDEAS FROM THE BLACKLIGHT”
SBC’s Weekly Newsletter for Professionals
If your attempts at networking aren’t making serious inroads, you may need to reconsider the conversation starters you’re using. Research led by Professor Sean Martin of the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business looked at how specific topics might affect whether a new connection would want to stay in touch later.

It turns out, people who centered the conversation on their careers were more likely to create a lukewarm first impression. Meanwhile, people who shared details about their lives outside of work had a much better reception.

For their study, the researchers recorded conversations in a lab experiment and in the field at a technology firm. Afterward, they analyzed those exchanges using language processing software. They say their findings on conversational reactions held across the two settings.

The differences detected by Martin and his colleagues related more to the way people speak about their work. Our voices and word choices change when we discuss more personal topics. When people talked about work, the researchers found they used more “achievement-oriented, transactional words” like “excel,” “win,” “gain,” and “success.” This vocabulary sends an unconscious signal that the speaker may not have a warm personality or be a good listener.

Better Conversation Starters to Consider
Now that you know a crucial networking mistake to avoid, let’s turn to better conversation starters when meeting new people.

The true goal of networking is to cultivate authentic connections over time. Harvard Business School research has shown that the more questions you ask, the more your conversation partner will like you—especially if you ask follow-up questions. People gravitate to those who ask thoughtful questions and listen to the replies. Also, conversations centered on getting to know something about the person outside of work signal genuine warmth. For example, you might ask:

 • What do you do when you’re not working?
 • Have you read any interesting books or articles lately?
 • Do you have any fun travel plans for the summer?
 • What would you be doing instead if you didn’t have the job you have now?
 • What’s one thing you wished people would ask you about?
 • What’s your favorite question to ask when you’re trying to get to know someone?
These questions spark an engaging conversation that offers a glimpse of the personality of the person with whom you’re chatting.

Tapping into the “Lizard Brain”
We’ve got one final tip to share: Look for ways to establish common ground. Relationship-building expert Patrick Ewers says, “Whenever you interact with someone, you want to end up in their ‘us’ bucket. You want to be part of their tribe.” This could be something as simple as listening to the same podcast or following the same sports team.

“When someone hears this, their reptile brain makes a calculation that says this person is like me,” Ewers explains. “And research has shown that thinking ‘I am like you’ instantly translates to ‘I like you.’ It’s how we process likability.”

Use both of these tactics to boost the odds that people you meet will walk away with a positive first impression that lays the foundation for a deeper relationship in the future.

Tuesday Tips: London Business School Essays, Tips for 2022-2023 [#permalink]
Expert Reply
FROM Stacy Blackman Consulting Blog: Tuesday Tips: London Business School Essays, Tips for 2022-2023

London Business School values independence and original thought. Other values on display through these London Business School essays are an international approach to business and culture.

The London Business School essays for the 2022-2023 admissions cycle include one required and one optional question. Showcasing all of your career accomplishments, extracurriculars, and personal attributes will be a challenge.

Therefore, you will likely need to maximize other parts of the application, like your resume and recommendations. Talk to your recommenders about the experiences in your background you might want to highlight through their letters. Also, use your resume to describe critical moments at work.

Start your research brainstorm by learning all you can about the culture at London Business School. This will help you answer these London Business School essays. Knowing the culture can help you prepare the rest of your application for admission.

One of the best ways to get to know LBS is to visit the campus and interact with a London Business School Student Ambassador. Take advantage of the school’s many virtual information sessions. Once you have a good sense of the school and how you will take advantage of the opportunity to attend LBS, you will be better prepared to approach the essay questions.

Do the London Business School essays challenge you? Contact us to learn how Stacy Blackman Consulting can help. To learn more about LBS, visit the program website.

London Business School Essays
Required Essay
What are your post-MBA goals and how will your prior experience and the London Business School programme contribute towards these? (500 words)
Self-awareness about your strengths and interests will help you refine what you truly want in your career for this London Business School essay. It could be helpful to talk to colleagues and alumni who have MBAs in your field to identify various career paths. Make sure that your career goals are both realistic and aspirational. Think about the short-term roles post-MBA that may lead to your most ambitious longer-term goals.

Your past experiences have likely informed your post-MBA plans. Touching on those most relevant will help you set the background for your current pursuit of an MBA. Don’t make this essay a mere rehash of your resume. Think about explaining the rationale for your decisions throughout the essay. Why did you pursue your past experience, and what has been the impetus behind subsequent career choices? At this point, why are you choosing LBS?

As you speak with current LBS students and attend virtual events, learn as much as you can about the programs, professors, and classes that may help you achieve your goals. Plus, consider what you will learn at LBS and in your time in London. What new skills and courses will lead to the achievement of your career goals? Also, the network you create during your MBA will open doors for you, and preparing for this essay can help you to make the most of the experience.

Optional Essay
Is there any other information you believe the Admissions Committee should know about you and your application to London Business School? (500 words)
In describing the LBS vision, and continued business impact, the school represents the culture this way: “We challenge how things are done and we teach our students to constantly question and innovate. We believe in providing our students with the most diverse, world-class, and rewarding business education in the world.”

This open-ended question is an excellent opportunity to touch on a personal story and add color to your story to demonstrate how you will be part of this culture. This could be the ideal place to describe a unique background, experience, or attribute that did not fit elsewhere in the application.

Diversity can mean many things. For example, it can be where you are from, the culture you identify with, or your approach to life. If diversity of experience or attitude doesn’t resonate for you, have you been challenged and innovated? When have you taken a new view or challenged conventional wisdom? A global perspective is invaluable, as well. Think about stories that could illustrate how you have demonstrated any of these qualities that are valued by LBS.

Yale MBA Essay Tips for 2022-2022
Required Prompt: Describe the biggest commitment you have ever made. (500 words maximum)
Behavioral questions like this one (tip-off word: “describe”) require you to describe how you act in specific situations. Choose an example from your past experiences, and think about what a commitment meant to you. Was it a job or an organization that you were involved in? Or, maybe your commitment relates to a value or a person.

Provide detailed specifics about your commitment and why it qualifies as the biggest one you have ever made. What did you think or say? Describe the actions you took. How did you feel about the result? The commitment should be large enough to show the admissions committee at Yale SOM who you are and what motivates you.

Solo commitments might be appropriate since many MBA applicants are individual contributors. However, ideally, you will demonstrate how you work with others as a leader and team member. Leadership and commitment often go hand-in-hand because the best leaders commit to making the team and organization better.

Remember, Yale SOM students focus on making a difference in the world. The topic of this question demonstrates your values. Therefore, those values ideally include actions that impact the greater community. Regardless of whether you choose an individual or team commitment, make sure you show how it made a significant positive impact. Also, keep in mind the Yale SOM’s mission while writing this essay.

As former dean Edward A. Snyder once explained: “Yale SOM is persistent and disciplined in our efforts to connect to big issues, to integrate with Yale, to be distinctively global, and to work across all sectors. All of our efforts are guided by a strategy that accounts for how the world has changed over the last several decades and the implications for leadership. The success of our efforts depends entirely on extraordinary alignment and superior teamwork—internally and externally.”

A note on word counts
The 500-word limit can be daunting. Don’t censor yourself on the first draft and limit what you write. Instead, start by describing each step of your accomplishment in detail. Describe what you did, the reaction of others, and your feelings. From there, cut out anything too detailed or superfluous to the story.

Once you have done that, you’ll find you can work within that 500-word maximum. Another great tactic is to use an outside reader because a new set of eyes can see what is most important to the story and streamline your essay.

FROM Stacy Blackman Consulting Blog: Kellogg MBA Essays for 2022-2023

Are you targeting Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management? Then it’s time to shift into high gear. The Kellogg MBA essays for the 2022-2023 admissions cycle have been confirmed. (Here are the Kellogg deadlines, released earlier this month.)

The essays let you explain, in your own words, why you think Kellogg is right for you. Take some time to think through the experiences that led you here and how they have shaped where you want to go.

The following two Kellogg MBA essays are required of all applicants:

Kellogg’s purpose is to educate, equip and inspire leaders who create lasting value. Provide a recent example where you have demonstrated leadership and created value. What challenges did you face and what did you learn?  (450 words)[/*]

Values are what guide us in our life and work. What values are important to you and how have they influenced you? (450 words)[/*]
Certain applicants will respond to additional questions:
One-Year applicants: Please discuss your post-MBA career goal, the current experience you will leverage to support the transition, and the Kellogg One-Year MBA opportunities that will help you reach this goal. (250 words)

MBAi applicants:The Kellogg McCormick MBAi Program is designed to train the next generation of leaders who can help businesses deliver successful outcomes through AI-driven technology. Tell us about your firsthand experience with this disconnect between business and technology and how MBAi will prepare you to successfully lead businesses at the intersection. (450 words)

MMM applicants: The five core values of the MMM Program are curiosity, creativity, empathy, open-mindedness and a learning mindset. Describe a situation in which you demonstrated one of these values. Why is this value an important part of the MMM experience for you? (250 words)

JD-MBA applicants: Please discuss your post-JD-MBA career goals and why the JD-MBA Program is the right program to help you reach those goals. (250 words)

Reapplicants: Since your previous application, what steps have you taken to strengthen your candidacy? (250 words)

All applicants have the opportunity to provide explanations or clarification in Additional Information. Use this section if you think the person reviewing your application might have a few questions about one or more of your responses. This could include:

Unexplained gaps in work experience[/*]

Academic, GMAT, or GRE performance[/*]

Extenuating circumstances that we should be aware of when reviewing your application[/*]
Video Essays
The Kellogg admissions team advises the following in regards to the video essay:

We’ve read your essays, we’ve read your resume — now we want you to bring all that to life in a video. Show us the person behind all those carefully crafted words. The video will be comprised of three questions, each designed to help you showcase your personality and share some of the experiences that brought you here today.

While they are an optional component of the application, we find these videos to be a great opportunity for you to tell us more about your story, experiences and why Kellogg is the right place for you.

Here are some things to keep in mind as you prepare to complete this section:

Video essays are due 96 hours after the application deadline[/*]

A video essay link will appear on your application status page after you submit your application and payment[/*]

You will need an internet-connected computer with a webcam and microphone[/*]

The video should take about 20-25 minutes to complete, which includes time for setup[/*]
After submitting your application and payment, you will be able to access the video essay through your application status page. You will be asked to answer three questions:

Video essay 1: Please introduce yourself to the admissions committee.

– Consider this your opportunity to share what you would want your future Kellogg classmates and our admissions committee to know about you. What makes you, you?

Video essay 2: What path are you interested in pursuing, how will you get there, and why is this program right for you?

– This is an intentionally broad question so you can answer honestly and meaningfully. We want to know why you’re pursuing an MBA and why you’re choosing a particular Kellogg Full-Time Program

Video essay question #3: This question will be based on a challenge you’ve faced and what you’ve learned from it.

Stanford MBA Essay Questions for 2022-2023 [#permalink]

FROM Stacy Blackman Consulting Blog: Stanford MBA Essay Questions for 2022-2023

Stanford Graduate School of Business has confirmed the essay prompts for the 2022-2023 admissions cycle. The required Stanford MBA essay questions remain unchanged from previous admissions seasons. However, the optional questions have been reduced to a single prompt this year.

Stanford asks for two personal essays in order to gain a greater understanding of applicants’ character and hopes. “In each essay, we want to hear your genuine voice,” the admissions team advises. “Think carefully about your values, passions, aims, and dreams. There is no ‘right answer’ to these questions — the best answer is the one that is truest for you.”

Stanford MBA Essay Questions
Essay A: What matters most to you, and why?
For this essay, we would like you to reflect deeply and write from the heart. Once you’ve identified what matters most to you, help us understand why. You might consider, for example, what makes this so important to you? What people, insights, or experiences have shaped your perspectives?

Essay B: Why Stanford?
Describe your aspirations and how your Stanford GSB experience will help you realize them. If you are applying to both the MBA and MSx programs, use Essay B to address your interest in both programs.

Length
Both essays combined may not exceed 1,050 words. We recommend up to 650 words for Essay A and up to 400 words for Essay B. We often find effective essays that are written in fewer words.

Optional Short-Answer Question
In the Essays section of the application, we ask you to tell us about who you are and how you think Stanford will help you achieve your aspirations. We are also interested in learning about the things you have done that are most meaningful to you. If you would like to go beyond your resume to discuss some of your contributions more fully, you are welcome to share up to three examples (up to 1,200 characters, or approximately 200 words, for each example)

What do we mean by “optional”? We truly mean you have the opportunity to choose. If you feel that you’ve already described your contributions well in other areas of the application, congratulations, you’re done! If not, feel free to use this opportunity to tell us more.

Question: Think about times you’ve created a positive impact, whether in professional, extracurricular, academic, or other settings. What was your impact? What made it significant to you or to others?
