Stick with Microsoft. You would not get the brand name recognition for taking on that type of role at McKinsey, compared to a traditional management consulting gig. Since Microsoft is a software company and has a blue chip name, it's your better bet.

Ultimately though, it doesn't make a huge difference. The 2+2 programs really take into consideration your academic performance, test scores and extracurricular activities more than anything else.

On paper, that's a good profile and nothing disqualifying you from getting a look by the Stanford GSB AdCom. I don't see any stand-out, "wow" factors based on what you have provided but I'm sure there's more depth to your profile.

For you, it's going to come down to the strength of the written components of your application (essays, LORs, etc.) and how you choose to brand yourself in the process. We specialize in that at Admissionado. Please reach out if you'd like a free consultation:

Hi Susan5 - you have a very solid profile based on what you provided, but I would want to know a lot more about you before I could make a full assessment. Do you have leadership experience at work and/or via the community activity you mention? Have you been promoted at work? Will your recommenders say that you perform better than your peers? Can you demonstrate impact?

I agree with the other feedback you received that most important will be your ability to tell a compelling story that connects the dots in your life, explaining what is most important to you and why, showing the impact you want to have, and how your experience and an MBA from the GSB will best help you get there. If you would like help along this journey, please sign up for a free 30-minute consultation here. In any case, best of luck to you!

Hi patopc - I'm happy to share my thoughts on your profile. Out of curiosity, have you already applied to the GSB and are now waiting for results? I ask because you mention strong LOR and Essays.

I think you have some things working for you and others a bit against you. On the downside, as I'm sure you know, your GRE verbal score is under Stanford GSB's average. I think they will be more concerned with your Q score, but given your GPA is also under their average, they may have a concern in this area. Having said that, Stanford in particular accepts candidates with a wide range of scores, particularly for the GRE, and you are certainly within an acceptable range.

I like your work experience a lot - especially your four promotions, which I assume is faster than your peers. You might want to explain in your optional essay why you moved jobs multiple times - your brief explanations here seem sufficient.

Do you have any experience with ed-tech or education investing, or is this a complete pivot for you? You will be up against other candidates who also want to start ed-tech companies who, at least based on what you've said, have more relevant experience already and therefore may come across as better positioned to do so or even more credible.

I also appreciate how busy you are in PE, but schools ideally do want to see some EC leadership experience. By any chance have you served in any committee or similar roles within your PE or VC firms, such as mentoring, recruiting, or diversity? These can also "count" towards extra leadership experience.

I hope this helps - if you have yet to apply and want to explore working with a consultant, feel free to sign up for our 30 minute free consultation here. In any case, best of luck to you!

Correct I have applied to Stanford but wanted to see if it was a real long shot for me, I have a couple of schools I think I have more of a shot (GPA and GRE are in line with their avgs) I want to apply to in round 2 (kellogg, Wharton, MIT, etc)

I know my verbal score is below, but I don't know if they they will be more lenient given I am not from an english speaking country.

I explained my movements in the section on the work history. I do have experience in ed tech, closed a couple of deals in the space in my experience and have analyzed other investments in the industry.

I didn't put it in the EC part, but I was a co captain and founder of the soccer team at one fund, and was in charge of analyst training and mentoring and hiring in two of my past jobs. I would routinely give them books to read to prepare for the job, such as Orit Gadiesh's book on PE and would prepare other training materials for them.

I also spend my free time helping friends and colleagues (on one occasion helped my former boss with an individual startup he was creating in the sustainable agriculutre industry) as an advisor helping with their startups and projects, but don't have this in my CV as its more informal

Hi shaunak075 - I'm happy to share my thoughts on your profile. From what you provided, you seem to have a compelling profile overall, though there is more I would want to know. Although your undergrad is not great, your high GMAT score will definitely help overcome that. Your work experience also seems strong, especially your international experience and what sounds like a variety of roles. What's unclear, and I think will be important to your overall chances, is whether you can demonstrate leadership and impact at work, particularly important since you don't have more traditional community examples. Have you been promoted faster or otherwise performed better than your peers? Your certifications are also a plus.

I'm most concerned about you rating your essays a 7 out of 10 (does this mean you have applied already?). I think the essays are the most important part of your application, and need to do a great job connecting the dots in your life -- explaining what's most important to you and why (in the case of the GSB), and also explaining where you want to head, and how an MBA from each specific school will best help you get there. You have an awesome GMAT score, but unfortunately a great score is not enough to get you in (though it does of course work in your favor).

It sounds like you have some great anecdotes to use as examples. If you have yet to apply and would like to explore further how we might help you strengthen your essays and overall application, please sign up for a free 30-minute consultation here. In any case, best of luck to you!

Hi Vin5,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Your profile looks good on the surface. Starting with the stats, your undergrad score seems quite low, but you have a great GRE score. As a result, you can compensate for a low score. On the work front, you didn't share many details, but I'm assuming your 11 years of experience must have been groove with stories of leadership, creativity, and significant contributions to the organization you work for. You also have international experience; when schools say 'international experience,' they want to know if you've worked in diverse settings (multicultural) and interacted with individuals from various backgrounds. You will need to exhibit the same in your apps. Your ECs appear to be good; they will assist you in diversifying your apps. The primary selection criteria for MSx programs are as follows:

1) Intellectual vigor
2) Leadership successes and community service
3) Personal characteristics and contributions
4) Clarity of purpose.

Make sure to include the above-mentioned elements in your profile. Other factors, including certificates, awards, and so on, will offer your profile an advantage. You might be interested in reading how to distinguish yourself in your MBA application essays; you will get the knowledge that will help you in increasing your chances of admission to the desired Business school. Although your past success is a good predictor of your future performance, the program also evaluates your beliefs and objectives to decide how much you will benefit from and give to the MSx program. There are other global mba programs with 11-12 years of work experience, such as the Darden global EMBA and the Columbia-EMBA global. These programs are specifically designed to develop global leaders by giving both a degree and worldwide experience. You can also look at these. Overall, your profile is strong, and you have a good chance of getting into Stanford. Following that, the essential part of your application will be how you connect all of the experiential dots and construct a compelling story. If you'd like, we are happy to hop on a call sometime this week to brainstorm your chances together. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Hi Vin5,

Thank you for your post. You have some strong credentials and it is great to see that you have started to work through articulating your MBA goals.

Our clients who apply to programs like Stanford MSx tend to have more than 10 years and on average often 15, so you fit into that range. Stanford is a great pick if you are interested in entrepreneurship and the startup/tech scene, which it seems that you are. I do, however, recommend targeting 5 to 8 schools to maximize your chances of acceptance. All business schools look to fill their classes with diverse candidates, and you cannot always predict which school might need someone who fits your profile. Adding a broad range of schools helps to balance this (some additional options include MIT Sloan Fellows and LBS Sloan Masters).

In terms of maximizing your chances for Stanford specifically, you will want to really want to articulate passion and share how you will be unique when discussing your goals. You must go beyond simply stating what position you are hoping to achieve and share your vision for improving your chosen tech company or the field at large.

A strong personal story will also help set you apart from the crowd. Personal MBA Coach started with the premise that everyone has a personal story and that the most successful candidates craft unique and compelling stories. This continues to be a cornerstone of our support and the area where we find our clients need the most guidance.

To get started:

- Make a list of everything you have done in your life and take the time to write it all down. Think carefully about the decisions you have made, activities you enjoy and, most importantly, why you made those choices.
- Think about your future goals. What do you want to do after you earn your MBA and, again, why?
- Next, look for a theme! What single idea connects items from #1 and #2? This is the hard part, so give it time.

Personal MBA Coach has helped a number of clients gain admission to the Stanford MSx program and works with many Indian applicants, as well as software developers.

We would be happy to help set you up for success via our comprehensive packages. Feel free to reach out to scott@personalmbacoach.com to discuss your situation in more detial.

Best,
Personal MBA Coach.

Hi All!

Can you please review my profile?

Thank you very much!

Background and nationality: Hungarian, male, 27 years old by the time I apply.

Undergrad Information: Law degree from a Hungarian university, GPA: 4,61/5 with a summa cum laude distinction, top 15% of the class. I have received national excellence scholarships (these scholarships are given to students who have particularly high GPAs and performed certain extracurricular activities) for three semesters and national merit scholarships for all other semesters from the Hungarian Ministry of Justice and have received a Dean’s Award as well.

GMAT: aiming for 760-770

Work experience and leadership: by the time I apply I’ll have more than three years of experience working as a transactional lawyer on real estate and m&a deals at leading international law firms in Budapest, including 200-400 million EUR cross-border deals, not much leadership experience as I’m still considered a quite junior associate in the legal environment, however I have regularly coordinated different sub-tasks of a larger matter, where I had to lead and coordinate the work of my colleagues who are even more junior than me.

Community and others: now this is definetely one of my weakest points, I do not have much community experience apart from being part of a college for advanced studies during my years at university, I also have won and placed well on a couple of national competitions and participated in an international competition as well and had several internships during uni as extracurricular activities.

Post MBA goals:
Short term: switch my carrier to investment banking, as I’m definetly more interested in the finance/business side of deals than the legal side
Long term: build on my experience gained as a transactional lawyer and an investment banker and establish an m&a/transactional advisory firm in Hungary

International experience: I have studied a semester abroad as an Erasmus student, but no significant international work experience

Hi there, I am looking for some advise on how to approach my MBA applications, would really appreciate any insights or suggestions :)
My profile:
- GMAT - 750
- Asian F Indian 24 y.o.
- Undergrad - Business (Finance)
- GPA ~ 3.5
- WE - 3 years Top Investment Management firm doing a FinTech product and client-facing role working in the Southeast asia region
- Target school - Stanford
- Post MBA goals: Short term - product management at a tech firm in USA and then hopefully start my own company

ECAs:
1. Non-profit personal branding (resumes, cover letters etc)
2. Started a club in University for modernizing education
3. Working on an Education mentorship side hustle at the moment
4. Looking to join another NGO in the education and financial awareness space for migrant workers

Questions:
1. My undergrad GPA is quite low compared to the average of 3.8 at Stanford - anyway I can possibly show improvement on that? What if I do a side course - will that help?
2. Is it too early for me to apply for MBA? I want to apply this year Sept (i.e. intake of fall 2023)
3. Any other advice to help me strengthen my profile?
4. I am also looking to apply for Knight-Hennessey Scholarship which I know is extremely competitive, but if anyone has advice on that also it will greatly help!
Really appreciate everyone's time and insights!! :)
