Hi aastikc,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Starting with stats, you have a solid GMAT score, which can compensate for your GPA. On the work front, your professional experience seems good. I advise you to highlight the ‘leadership’ and ‘impact’ experiences in your work and the experience and insights of the startup. Your community experience does give an idea of a leader in you. About your post-MBA goals, you will need to be more specific. I would like to know more about your post-MBA goals and some major aspects of your work profile. Overall you have a good profile, what’s going to matter most in your application is how you connect the experiential dots and build a great story to stand out from other applicants in the pool. If you are targeting fall 2021 deadlines, you may want to read an article on How to maximize your chances for fall deadlines to get some insights.

If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and your further chances at the b-school. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Let’s maximize your chances in Round 1 for fall intake

Cheers!

Hello aastikc,

Thank you for sharing. As an Indian engineer, you are part of a competitive applicant pool. Your 750 GMAT will help here, as will your community impact at A2zero, which sounds like a very interesting project.

Stanford is looking to see the impact that candidates have had on others (people, groups, and organizations), so this will be key to spotlight in your applications.

When Personal MBA Coach works with applicants from startups, there is a specific strategy we have. It will be important to highlight certain elements of your job and be sure to execute your story to perfection. We can help you do so via our comprehensive services, which include unlimited essay editing.

Stanford is a great pick if you are interested in entrepreneurship and the startup/tech scene. I do, however, recommend targeting 5 to 8 schools to maximize your chances of acceptance. If you want to send a note to scott@personalmbacoach.com, I would be happy to evaluate your profile in more detail and discuss how we can potentially work together. Looking forward to connecting!

Best,
Personal MBA Coach

[Profile Review - deferred admission ] 21M, Co-founder, 3.55 GPA, International applicant - Applying to Stanford,

I appreciate any feedback or suggestions from this great community! I'll be applying for the differed admission next semester as I graduate (early in Feb 2022).

BACKGROUND:

Work experience: 4 months as a product design intern at a leading cloud startup in Malaysia (redesigned their whole system and proposed and built 2 new functionalities), 6 months remote software engineer. 3 months as a part-time UX designer.

Entrepreneurship experience: Co-founder of a Libyan startup for building and launching digital products in the Libyan market, our goal is to launch 5+ apps in the Libyan empty digital market that can bridge the gap between Libya and the digital life (Launched products so far, E-learning app, e-commerce app, one unsuccessful app), +600,000 users (from 7 countries), operating remotely in 3 countries, bootstrapped in the first two years, and we got 200,000$ in funding this year, total revenue in this year as a 3 y/o -> 500k $ (which is super high in my local currency).

Extracurriculars: Founder (Leader) & a Committee Member of the university tech club, Consultant, and UX designer at Local google developers club. Campus students Ambassador for 5 months. research assistant at H.O.M.E lab for AI studies.

In-campus related activities: Participated in Berkeley Method of Entrepreneurship Bootcamp (BMoE) and pitched a business idea to 8 different investors, awarded 5th place out of 50 teams. Also, with a team of 4, I built an internal application for my university students to use. Additionally, I won 3rd place in the UX design competition by the school of engineering at my university.

Undergrad School: Duel Degree from (Sunway university [Malaysia] & Lancaster University [UK], Software Engineering major. (3 Years, 3 semesters/year, Once I graduate I'll receive a degree from each uni I've mentioned.). -> Current GPA (3.55) , aiming for (3.7).

Related coursework -> Introduction to entrepreneurship, Startup Foundry & Code camp

Other Education: Certificate in Entrepernship from oxford university (Undergraduate credit course), Starting CORe from HBX next Sept, took multiple credit courses from oxford ->(Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Applied data science)

Professional Certifications: Project management -> PMP, PMI-ACP, PSM2, PSPO2, IIBA ECBA, ITIL, and six sigma.

Technical certification -> 2x Microsoft cloud certs, Certified Software Development Associate (CSDA) from IEEE.

Online courses -> Software Product Management Specialization from the University of Alberta, MBAMATH, Business foundation specialization from University from Wharton, Entrepreneurship specialization from Wharton too.

Current active member at -> PMI, IIBA, IEEE, and IEEE Computer Society.

Sex/Nationality: M, Libyan (White African). -> underrepresented -> I've been living in Malaysia for 7 years. (7 years of international experience)

GMAT -> 720 (should I retake it ?)

POST-MBA GOALS :

short-term:
By the time I enroll in the program, I'll have been completed 3 years of entrepreneurship experience. I want to learn the foundation of the business to scale up my business in a +5 million$ market.

Long-term:
Developing a more diverse network and relationships. My network is extremely tech-centric (devs and PMs for the most part) and even if I'm not interested in making a jump to IB/PE or back to the normal employee life, you never know where life will lead you.

QUESTIONS:

What other things I could do as a full-time student, founder, and part-time PM that might strengthen my weak application?

What are my chances? am I going too big?

anythings to make my application stronger?

Hi ShehabBeram2000,

Thank you for sharing your profile. I’m really impressed with your current profile. Your entrepreneurship experience is amazing, and your own start-up would have given you experience in different company’s function. You co-founded a company to launch digital products, which means you identified and solved a problem. That is something business schools expect from you. Your profile outlines more and how you can relate to society. You will need to summarise your impact, achievements, and motivation for starting them. Entrepreneurial stories can be very good because they provide so much experience. And this is particularly true if the company is performing well. The most impressive aspects are, of course, the outcomes - the company's growth and scale, whether it received seed funding or incubator support, and so on. Discussing your coursework and certification courses would undoubtedly strengthen your academic profile. You may want to read the article on what b-schools look in the candidate for deferred MBA. This will help you to get some better insights :)

-What other things I could do as a full-time student, founder, and part-time PM that might strengthen my weak application?

I think you should focus on improving your GMAT score by 20-30 points up. It will maximize your chances and exhibit your academic potential.

-What are my chances? am I going too big?

You have a decent shot at Stanford. However, you should also consider different programs to balance your chances.

-anythings to make my application stronger?

Get your post-MBA goals more precise. While you might not be specifically asked to do so, it is worth considering how you can link your goals to your past experience and achievements. Adcoms are interested in knowing how you think about the future, what challenges you've discovered with existing processes, and how you plan to fix them for long-term improvement. So, choose the short-term and long-term objectives carefully. This would make the story more orderly, logical, and concise, which the admissions committee would appreciate.

If you need any direction/guidance over any aspect of your application and have any specific concerns, you can ask us on the forum Ask MBA & Beyond.

Overall you have a great profile. You seem an achiever through your profile. However, what’s going to matter most about your application is how you link experiential dots and make a great narrative. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further chances to b-school. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Let’s maximize your chances in Round 1 for fall intake

Hi ShehabBeram2000 - I agree with the other feedback you received, and just want to emphasize that you seem like a really compelling candidate for deferred admissions at the GSB (and other deferred programs for that matter). The deferred programs give preference to candidates who might not otherwise apply for an MBA in several years, and entrepreneurs are often one of their target groups. So your already being a successful entrepreneur, and your desire to remain one and grow and scale your business, should work in your favor. I also think you being part of an underrepresented demographic, as you point out, and your international experience, will help differentiate you.

I agree that improving your GMAT will increase your chances (as will the higher GPA you are targeting), and that you should at least explore additional deferred programs beyond Stanford, since it is such a stretch school for even the very best candidates. I also agree more clarity around especially your long term career goals will be important. What impact do you want to have in the world? And importantly, why? Stanford in particular asks you what matters most to you and why, so you will need to be able to answer that question in an authentic and compelling way. Although you will build your network at the GSB or any of these schools, I wouldn't recommend emphasizing that on your application as one of the primary reasons you want to get an MBA. Dig deeper around what impact you want to have in the world, and how an MBA, particularly one from Stanford (and each of the schools to which you apply), will best help you get where you're going. Best of luck to you!!

Hi shaunak075 - I'm happy to provide some initial thoughts, but would want to know a lot more about you. Your GMAT is great, and your international experience and industry will help differentiate you from within what you know is a highly overrepresented demographic. How have you done at work? Have you been promoted? Do you have leadership experience and impact that you can demonstrate? You mention volunteering for 7 months - again, does that demonstrate any leadership and/or impact?

I'm very glad you saved your boss' life and that he is alright now (!!) -- schools will also want your LORs to demonstrate that your work experience has been better than your peers, so hopefully he will also be able to speak to that in his LOR.

Do you have a sense for your short and long term goals? It will be important for you to explain in your applications where you are headed, where you've been in terms of experience, and why an MBA from each particular school will help you get there. You'll need to connect all of those dots. So in terms of which schools would be a good fit for you, it really depends on what you want to do in the future, then research which schools are the best fits based on that. Schools also differ in terms of their cultures, their resources (e.g., clubs, centers of excellence, broader university offerings), their teaching styles, etc - you should consider all of these things as you figure out which ones are best of you. This research will help you narrow down your school selection, but also help you explain in your applications why each school is such a good fit.

Although your GMAT will certainly get these top schools to take a serious look at you, you will also need to differentiate yourself in terms of your experience and your essays to make a compelling candidate. Hope this helps - and best of luck to you!!

There's nothing on paper that suggests you won't be a candidate, though there are a few things you need to demonstrate to give yourself a shot at Stanford GSB:

(1) You really need to get that 730+ score on the GMAT. Is that actually attainable for you?

(2) You need to seriously refine your goals for your essays. The GSB essays require you to know your pathway like the back of your hand. I am sure you have deeper thoughts than what you have written, but just so you know, the MBA programs are slightly skeptical about careers in entrepreneurship. That's not to say you can't talk about starting your own fund, firm, company, etc. but you do need to be very prescriptive about the vision and not paint an image of "I'll figure it out when I get there."

(3) You have listed lots of activities and achievements - that's great! You do have to find a way to present all of this in a cohesive and clear manner. Having a few "themes" to organize your "best hits" is the key to making you stand out in this very competitive process.

Please reach out to us at Admissionado if you'd like to discuss further.

We could use more information, such as:

(1) GMAT or GRE score
(2) Can you extrapolate on your startup experience? Any major/notable accomplishments?
(3) Other extracurricular activities besides those you have listed?
(4) Proposed career goals (short- and long-term)?
(5) Any x-factors or special circumstances?

The little you have provided looks good but for admission to Stanford GSB, you are going to need to hit on all cylinders.

Hi Rishabh97,

You come from a competitive pool of applicants, therefore, I would suggest you aim for a score of 730+ to maximize your chances (for scholarship as well). On the work front, your work experience seems lower than the average required for the b-schools. You will need to bring impactful stories from 2 years of work experience. Your ECs seem good. Speaking about all these with the right passion will bring diversity to your apps.

I hope this helps!

If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week or once you have taken your GMAT to discuss your profile in length and gauge your fit for the b-schools. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Hi ssraj111,

Thank you for sharing your profile. However, it is difficult to give an extensive evaluation from the details you have shared. What I can gauge is great academic potential. You will need to bring leadership stories from your 4 years of work experience as a professor. Your post-mba goals are in alignment with your prior work experience. To evaluate your profile further, I would like to know more about your profile in detail. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further chances to the b-schools. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Hi ssraj111 - I agree with the other feedback you received, and would add that you will also need to explain why you need an MBA to reach your goals. Depending on more specifics, an MBA may or may not make sense. For example, are you trying to become a Dean or an administrator in an education institution? The PhD you already have is more typical for these roles. Or are you trying to create or run an EdTech company, for example? Then an MBA could definitely help you. You also will want to explain why Stanford in particular (and any other school to which you are applying) is such a great fit for you specifically, given what you want to do.

I'm also unclear on your extracurriculars - Stanford will ideally want to see demonstrated leadership in your community experience, in addition to hopefully leadership and impact demonstrated at your work.

Hope this helps - and best of luck to you!
