I believe there is a missing preposition in the correct answer:
Failure in the investment of stock
and in other portfolios
otherwise, the sentence is illogical:
failures in the investment of stock
+ other portfolios
caused smth..
this doesn't make any sense.

In C is "investments of" idiomatically correct? I would say "investments of" should follow a noun who is doing the investments. Ex: "investments of America" or "investments of insurers" etc.
In C "investments of stocks" sounds as if stocks are investing. Errr... illogical!!!
