GMAT requires very little memorization. GRE requires a lot. Specially for Verbal. Difficult for non native speakers.

Hi bodoorydo,

If you are considering the GRE, why don't you take an offiical practice exam to see how you do? Once you do, feel free to report back with your score breakdown, and we can take things from there.

I would say not to get disheartened by the scores.
I felt 1 and 2 relatively easier than 3rd one. I have generally observed myself and my fellow friends get 80 to 100 points drop but eventually you learn the things where you went wrong.

But yeah if you want to take a mock of GRE and see how that turns out, then it may be good!!!

Hi all,
I’m usually not the type to post online, but I have no one to get advice from on this.
I made the mistake of taking 2 official GMAT Focus tests when I wasn’t ready and scored 515 both times:
#1 & #2 – VR 80 / QR 73 / DI 74

Realizing the seriousness of the situation, I studied for 1.5 months and got the following GMAC Prep scores:
  • Prep #1 – 705 (VR 84 / QR 84 / DI 84)
  • Prep #2 – 695 (VR 86 / QR 84 / DI 75)
  • Prep #3 & #5 – 595 (VR 82 / QR 78 / DI 78)
Since I had gone through the OGs repeatedly, the first two preps felt easier. I think the latter two scores reflect my actual level.

Section-wise breakdown:

VR: Most comfortable section, no timing issues.
  • RC: Usually get 2 passages perfect, but mess up 1 passage. Often narrow down to 2 choices and pick the wrong one.
  • CR: Most inconsistent section. Same pattern as RC—narrow to 2, pick the wrong one.

QR: Often miss the first two questions, spend too much time on 7–8 mid-section questions, and run out of time at the end.
  • With more time, I get them right, but not in under 2 minutes.
  • Practice: 30 OG questions, 3–4 timed sets/day, ~80% accuracy.
  • Background: Fine Design major, but I’ve done quantitative analysis in my career, so no excuse.

DI: Biggest time-management problem.
  • Wrong answers: ~50% silly mistakes, ~50% unsure why wrong.
  • No score improvement so far.

Goal: 695–705 by Dec this year.
Some suggest switching to the GRE (TOEFL 109, easier math). But when I tried a GRE mock, I didn’t feel comfortable with RC passages.

Question:
  • Am I forcing the GMAT even without the ideal skill set?
  • Should I stop wasting time and switch to GRE for a faster path to my target score?

Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated.
