Hello All,
I need advice on preparing for GMAT. I gave Mock - 1 of MBA.com and got a score of Q48 & V25. Wherein I made very silly mistakes in around 4 questions of quant. Based on this information I need the following insights:-
a) What would have been my score if I got those 4 questions right in quant?
b) Do I need an external prep program for quant or should I focus on weaker areas as per analysis done after giving mock 1 and continue with
GMAT Club tests and timers?
c) Will I be able to improve on the verbal score by the support of GMAT club timers and tests along with Manhattan, OG & Powerscore, or should I got for an external course like that of
E-GMAT/veritas/Manhattan being non-native English speaker.
All insights will be appreciated.
Thank you:)
Hi Aashi,
Q48 is a very good score to start with assuming that you took the mock without any preparation. Let me first answer your questions and then share my insights on the path forward.
a) It is difficult to estimate because GMAT is an adaptive test and it really depends on which questions you got wrong. If they were easy questions such 500-600 level, the score wouldn’t have differed much but if they were 700 level questions, your score might have jumped to a 50.
b) I would recommend you to take a mock after 10 days of work on quant. If you still get a score around 48, then I think you should take a course. The idea for the 10 days of work on quant should be to focus on your weaker areas.
c) Verbal seems to be a bit of concern. And the score suggests that you might be having a few conceptual gaps and also you need a good understanding of the right methodology. You are likely using the conceptual knowledge of grammatical rules to solve SC questions. And for CR and RC, you might be just solving by reading the question and jumping into the answer choices. This is not the right strategy to solve verbal questions on GMAT.
Verbal questions can be very tricky and test makers often set a lot of traps by using similar words in the answer choices to confuse students. GMAT doesn’t test you just on the concepts, it tests you on the application of concepts. To give you an example, the SC module on GMAT doesn’t test you on grammatical rules but it tests your ability to convey the right meaning without any ambiguity.
What GMAT actually tests?
Let me tell you, there are a few answer choices which have no grammatical errors, but they do convey a logical meaning. They might convey their own meaning but as long as it is different from the intended one, it has to be eliminated. So, by now you must have understood that you have to approach the SC questions from meaning stand-point. It is not something you can inculcate in a day or two. This takes a lot of effort. You have to shed your old practice and then start applying the new one. You might take a little more time in the initial stages to solve the question but that shouldn’t be a major concern.
For this, I recommend you to use a standard resource to learn because the resources you mentioned including OG might be great resources for GMAT like questions but what you need is a resource which teaches you concepts along with the strategies and the right methodology to solve questions.
If you are open to suggestions, I would recommend you to check the course of
