Q.1. Which one of the following statements about SSW is most likely to be true, assuming all of the projections provided in the tabs are correct?
(a) SSW will handle fewer bags of recyclables in Year 2 than in Year 1.: There is a likelihood of the opposite happening as the disposal of recyclable items would be free of cost for the residents. Tab 3 gives a refers to this point.
(b) SSW will charge a lower per-bag fee for garbage in Year 2 than in Year 1.: The cost depends on the type of garbage. If it is trash, the cost does not go down.
(c) SSW will pay more per ton to dispose of trash in Year 2 than in Year 1.: The Tab 1 gives the answer to it. 'The decreased competition among landfills is projected to result in SSW having higher trash disposal costs' directly refers to disposal of trash....... Correct
(d) SSW will operate a greater number of transfer stations in Year 2 than in Year 1.: We cannot infer the point as it is not mentioned in any of teh Tabs.
(e) SSW will handle fewer combined tons of trash and recyclables in Year 2 than in Year 1.: Again there is no reason to believe this to be true. The amount of trash may go down as the same could be included in recyclables, but overall there is nothing in the paragraphs that suggests the point given here.

Q.2 For each of the households, select "Pay More" if that household would pay more to dispose of its trash and recyclables at SSW's transfer stations in Year 2, as compared to Year 1, if the per-bag fee for trash were increased by $0.50. Otherwise , select "Not Pay More"
To get to the answer, let us understand the charges in both the years.
Year 1: $3.50 for trash and $0.50 for recyclables
Year 2: $3.50+0.50 for trash and $0 for recyclables
So, the overall cost in both cases is $4.00, it is just that in year 2, trash becomes expensive. Thus, wherever the amount of trash is more, the cost would go up.
(a) A household from which SSW collects 30 bags of trash and 20 bags of recyclables in both Year 1 and Year 2: Trash is more, so the cost would go up. You can check too: Year 1 - 30*3.5+20*0.5=115; year 2 - 30*4+20*0 = 120...Year 2>year1....YES
(b) A household from which SSW collects 30 bags of trash and 30 bags of recyclables in both Year 1 and Year 2: Trash and recyclables are same, so the cost would remain same. You can check too: Year 1 - 30*3.5+30*0.5=120; year 2 - 30*4+30*0 = 120...Year 2=year1....NO
(c) A household from which SSW collects 30 bags of trash and 40 bags of recyclables in both Year 1 and Year 2: Trash is less, so the cost would go down. You can check too: Year 1 - 30*3.5+40*0.5=125; year 2 - 30*4+20*0 = 120...Year 2<year1....NO

Q.3. For each of the following statements, select "Yes" if that statement is supported by the information provided. Otherwise, select "No"
(a) If the new law does not result in an increase in the amount of recyclables that are separated out from trash, SSW's total disposal costs in Year 2 will be no higher than those projected for Year 1
: Disposal costs would depend on the quantity of trash and recyclables generated. We do not know the quantities...NO
(b) In Year 2, residents will be less likely to mix trash in with their bags of recyclables than in Year 1:The Tab 3 suggest otherwise...NO
(c) SSW's total gross revenue from resident fees in Year 2 will not be greater than that projected for Year 1
: Again gross revenue will depend on the trash generated...NO
For Q2, how can we assume $0 for recyclables in year 2 ?
Plz explain.

very high quality question.

If the new law does not result in an increase in the amount of recyclables that are separated out from trash, SSW's total disposal costs in Year 2 will be no higher than those projected for Year 1

in order to answer this, you have to recognize that its not simply about the change referenced in the final tab. no matter what you assume with respect to this, you still dont know the quantity of trash and therefore the disposal costs.

SSW's total gross revenue from resident fees in Year 2 will not be greater than that projected for Year 1 - This should be yes - because with recyclable revenue stream lost - the revenue will come down.

I understand where this is coming from trash will be put in recycling bags which are free = have no cost so revenue should go down. I don't understand either.

We don't know the quantities of the trash or recycling being handled so we cannot conclude this.

I don't understand how recyclables fees for residents can be $0 in Q2. As far as I can understand, only SSW won't need to pay the fees, while they could still charge $0.50 to their customers.
