I'm in a situation where I have to make a massive decision in only a few days. It looks like I won't be sleeping this weekend!
I applied to a few schools last Fall and got some acceptances and waitlists/rejections. I paid my deposit this Spring at Carnegie Mellon and recently got an apartment near the school. I was pretty confident I'd be going there, and I've come to like my classmates and Pittsburgh a lot.
Fast forward to today, and I get a call from Cornell saying I was accepted off the waitlist. I'm both excited and disappointed. I was ready to go to Carnegie Mellon, and my girlfriend even moved into our place last week since she works remotely. I've talked to her about what happened, and she's open to either, but she seems to strongly prefer the CMU option because we already moved in, and she likes Pittsburgh. She did know I was waitlisted this whole time but neither of us expected this.
I have no clue what to do. My career goal is now strategy consulting in the short term (at first it was sustainability, but I realized that would be unlikely) and then something related to sustainability in the long term. I probably want to end up in the DC area or maybe Pittsburgh when I graduate.
CMU gave me a $60,000 scholarship (total over 2 years), and I got no money at Cornell. I have five days to make a decision that determines my and my girlfriend's future. I want to do what's best for my career, but I also want to make sure I'm doing everything I can to get the best outcome for her and our future. Talk about stress.
