IS][no verb!] a class of young painters
are concentratingWell, I am pleased to see that inverted structures are not getting the better of very many people!
Arvind42 is correct. "Here" is a dummy pronoun similar to the way the words IT and THERE work at times. ("Dummy" pronouns have a lot of names. "Placeholder" is another common name.)
Strip the sentence and make the dependent clause (the part following "that") into an independent clause in order to check the verb.
Original, [dependent cluause to check]:
The art professor is elated to discover that [here, at last, are a class of young painters who concentrate on technique rather than style.]
Stripped sentence:
The art professor is elated to discover that here, at last, are a class of young painters who concentrate on technique rather than style.
Stripped more:
Here,
at last, are a class
of young painters who concentrate on technique rather than style. Here are a class.
No. Incorrect.
Invert the subject and verb:
Wrong: A class are here.
Correct: A class IS here.
• Split #1: Subject / verb disagrementA class is a collective noun that takes a singular verb.
Options A and B use class ARE.
Option E does not have a verb. Not good.
Eliminate A, B, and E
• Split #2: Verb tenseOption D uses
had concentrated-- we do not need past perfect, AND
-- we cannot use past perfect. We need at least one later event in simple past tense, or a time marker. There is neither a later event in simple past tense nor a time marker.
Compare C and D.
C wins.
ANSWER C
