The author of a book on the women of the Temperance Movement suggests that the single trait common to the most influential members was a vision of  her public work like an extension of the safe-guarding  of moral integrity in the private household, which was considered the responsibility of wives and mothers.

My choice is A because I see that public work is singular, so the pronoun should be singular, only "her" is appropriate.

Furthermore, usage of like vs as: I do not understand the role of as/like here. OE stated that "as" is idiomatically correct in the phrase "as an extension". Is "as an extension" idiom, isn't it?

Can anyone help me explain.

I feel that the answer is B . To me "their" sounds correct because the reference to their is "most influential members" which is plural. So option A and E out. Option C does not give a clear picture as to whose "public work" it is referred to {author or influential members} , so Option C out. Between option B and D , D sounds incorrect to me because we are not drawing analogies , or comparing ( which is done by "like") . We are merely explaining with an example . So "as" sounds correct to me. Hence option (B) looks correct to me. PS: I am certainly not an expert in Verbal ..

"Her" is not clear referred in option A, C and E. "Like" is incorrect in D.

The idiom is "view as". I think that the idea is the same in this case.

The single trait was common to  most influential members  (plural). Thus, IMO the "their" in B is correct. 
In the "like vs. as" competition, "as" wins because the "public work" is not similar to the "extension".
"Like" is used when we want to express similarity between the objects being compared.

A is wrong for two reasons.

1. The pronoun "her" does not have any antecedent. In B "their" correctly refers to "members".

2. "Like" is wrong: Consider the idiom "view X  as  Y". Here the noun form "vision" is used: "vision of X  as  Y". Hence "like" is wrong.
