love this kind of question, especially the answer choices.
I pray on D-day will get answer choices with correct answer mentioned in it. :cool: :cool:

After prompted families should come so D & E are out.
B is out as it was a certain event in the past no hypothetical or assumptions.
In A it seems like thousands of dollars were never used.
So C is the best option.

Promopted families is intended usage in this case
C is more crisp and convey intended meaning.. also that in correctly refer back to bombs which never used

The Cold War, an apt name for the nervous post-World War II relations between the superpowers, prompted families to build bomb shelters costing thousands of dollars but fortunately were never used.

A) families to build bomb shelters costing thousands of dollars but

B) families to invest in bomb shelters that would cost thousands of dollars and that

C) families to invest thousands of dollars in bomb shelters that

D) the building by families of bomb shelters costing thousands of dollars that

E) the building of bomb shelters by families that cost thousands of dollars but

C is correct and concise

What is prob in A) choice.

I know C) is right "that" refers to "shelters"

But what is wrong in A.. . Plz help me.

Hi rrsnathan,
The problem with A is that 'costing thousands of dollars' (modifier) and 'were never used' (clause) are not parallel.
