E. $$10x+w*y$$

cost up to 10 ounces = 10x.

*** x per ounce

cost of additional ounces = (w - 10)y

Total = 10x + (w - 10)y

D should be the right answer for this question!

Here is what we know:
Cost of an ounce upto 10 ounces: x
Cost of an ounce after 10 ounces: y
Weight of the package : w, where w>10

Total cost = Quantity * Cost per item
Cost for 10 ounces = 10 * x

Excess over 10 ounces is charged at y per ounce, therefore,

w - 10 = number of ounces over 10 ounces (We know that w>10)
Cost for (w-10) ounces = (w-10)*y

To find the final price of sending w ounces add both together:
10x + (w-10)y

expression would be
$$10x+y*(w-10)$$
IMO D
