The figure above shows water in a tank whose base is 2 feet by 6 feet. If a rectangular solid whose dimensions are 1 foot by 1 foot by 2 feet is totally immersed in the water, how many inches will the water rise?

Since the rectangular solid is totally immersed i.e volume 1*1*2=2 cubic feet is to be submerged in the water, as a result height of the water will rise across surface are 2*6 ft square
so we can write 2=2*6*h rise in the height of water
h=2/12=1/6 feet
1/6 feet= 1//6*12 inches= 2 inches
Option C in my opinion

We do not need to know the height of the current water level. By immersing the rectangular solid we displace \(1*1*2 = 2 ft^3\) of water. Think of this as if we added 2 \(ft^3\) of water. Then the water level will rise by \(\frac{2 ft^3}{2 ft * 6 ft} = \frac{1}{6} ft\).
