The first reaction to any tragic news, such as someone’s death, is denial; it is difficult to accept that such an event took place.

A. that such an event took
B. that event like that has taken
C. such event’s taking
D. such event to take
E. that such an event has taken

Eliminating C and D on the ground that- 'to accept' should take directly the idea that is difficult to accept. C&D seem to imply that acceptance of event is difficult, whereas acceptance of event taking place is difficult.

Among A, B and E
Like on the GMAT is only used for comparison and never for quoting examples- Eliminating B
Between A and E
E makes more sense for the event that happened in the recent past, and we are here talking about events that just happened.
So present perfect makes more sense

so E
