The head of the Istanbul Chamber of Physicians, as well as leaders of Taksim Solidarity, an umbrella group that represents a large group of protesters, were detained, as security operations continued along Istiklal Street, a pedestrian road frequented by tourists, and on side streets late into the day.

a) an umbrella group that represent a large group of protesters, was detained
b) an umbrella group that represents a large group of protesters, were detained
c) an umbrella group that represent a large group of protesters, were detained
d) an umbrella group that represents a large group of protesters, was detained
e) a umbrella group that represents a large group of protesters, was detained

"The head of the Istanbul Chamber of Physicians, as well as leaders of Taksim Solidarity...."----> a plural. How? Because we are talking about head of the Istanbul Chamber of Physicians and leaders of the Taksim Solidarity.
A,D,E eliminated.
Umbrella group---> singular. Hence we need "represents" and not "represent".
+1 B.
Regards

This is exactly the reason it should be singular.
The head of the Istanbul Chamber of Physicians, as well as leaders of Taksim Solidarity - is singular. This is not a compound subject (joined by and) and hence OA should be D.
Its clearly given in Manhattan guide.
Can Manhattan instructors pitch in..

Yes you are right.
OA has to be D.
+1 to you.

When two subjects are connected by “As…as”, the verb will agree with the main subject & not the noun following the conjunction.
a)Mike, as well as his cousins,is going to the championship game.
b) The teachers, as well as the principal, are invited to the conference.

The head of the Istanbul Chamber of Physicians, as well as leaders of Taksim Solidarity, an umbrella group that represents a large group of protesters, were detained, as security operations continued along Istiklal Street, a pedestrian road frequented by tourists, and on side streets late into the day.

If we remove the modifier, the sentence will be
The head of the Istanbul Chamber of Physicians, as well as leaders of Taksim Solidarity, were detained, as security operations continued along Istiklal Street, a pedestrian road frequented by tourists, and on side streets late into the day.

The Main subject of the above sentence is HEAD & not the LEADERS. So Verb must be SINGULAR.
Only option D fulfills this criterion.
So OA has to be D.

Yes, guys, I agree that the OA should be D. This is an extract from NY Times article, which says otherwise.

I am not sure whether it's a typo,or where is the disconnect :(

There are 2 possibilities:
1. The author made a mistake. They do sometimes. Check: a-veritas-instructor-frankie-from-chicago-sent-us-a-link-125465.html?hilit=NY%20Times%20mistakes
2. He used the plural on purpose because it sounded better with 'leaders' even though it is incorrect. To a regular reader, 'were' (not 'was') feels right, - though I doubt they would do this since they are sticklers for grammar.
