Hey folks,

does anybody know how strict LBS is with the word limits? I know there have been discussions, and I know about the general 5 - 10 % rule. However, what bothers me is this bold-faced headline in the application form which says:

Please do not write more than the specified word limit for each essay. Any extra words or essays may be disregarded.

I think they put this phrase in for 2011 applications, it wasn't there in prior forms, right?

Grateful for any input.

Cheers,

Hi,

I did not write more than the allowed number of words... It seemed to me that that sentence was quite clear and did not want to leave my essays without a conclusion!

dont know about previous years. But for this year, my suggestion is that stick STRICTLY to word limit. Also, you should fill in the word count for every essay u've written on the essay form. I guess a word count of say 301 as opposed to miximal 300 really catches the eyes of the reviewer when he/she is reviewing the essay form.

I stuck to the word limits and didn't write a single word extra. As an example, INSEAD's essay word limits state "400 words approx." and I applied the 5-10% rule on INSEAD essays. However, LBS explicitly stated not to write more than the word limits. Stick to the word limits for LBS - why give them an opportunity to find issues with your application.

I've been contacted by my interviewer today to arrange the LBS interview. I'm located in London. I'm hoping to schedule the interview this week.

Interestingly, the email with the interviewer details states that the final decisions will me communicated by midnight GMT on 25th March. I thought 24th March was the decision deadline!

I just checked my mail. It also states midnight GMT on 25th March. Maybe they've changed the dates...

Guys, I will get location of my alumnus in a week or so; however I might I have travel to a completely different location next 3 weeks (not sure yet). Any idea how LBS might be able to help me out on this?

Just saw your post but I am not sure if you have solved your problem but I was in a similar situation.
I decided that I would be better of speaking with the adcom and they were very helpful and wiling to help in case necessary.
Therefore, I would suggest you do the same thing.

All the best to everyone

Can an existing student share details on the Second Year consulting project. What sort of projects does the students get and what is the process for getting a project of your liking. Is there a pool of projects that students pick.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated...

Regarding the word count, I didn't even see that bold sentence woops... My first essay is 4 words below the limit, another one that is spot on the limit, and the three last ones that are 2, 4 and 6 words over. I received an interview invite but I'm not sure if they will hold that against me for the final decision. We'll see...

2nd year projects are extremely open ended - as long as a faculty member approves the work to constitute enough work as a project. Its done in a group of 2 or 3 (depending on the work). Firms post such projects on the portal, but many students source their own project through contacts and networking. The students are responsible for negotiating the scope and outcomes of the project. An example project could be a market entry strategy for a start-up or a competitor analysis for a retailer or a portfolio optimisation strategy for a fund - it could really be anything as long as there is academic relevance and constitute enough work. The money part is also very open ended. Many students do projects with non-profits or charities or in an interesting as an "in" and do not get paid for it. Others get paid decent amounts.

Thanks bsd, that was very helpful. Also, what are the typical topics for the presentation in an interview. Is it business related, geo political or something else. If you can share a few examples (unless you are not supposed to), then it would great. I am just trying to prepare a strategy for the presentation.

cheers...

Regarding the presentation, you could check out ClearAdmit wiki. It has a list of past presentation topics. The list includes questions such as your thoughts on globalization, whether medical patents should be broken to help developing countries, advantages of a UN passport allowing people to travel freely, opinions on low-cost airlines, how can computer hacking be stopped....

I am not sure how you can prepare for any of these. As successful candidates have repeatedly stated, LBS is not testing where you stand on a topic as much as wanting to see your clarity of thought, ability to communicate and do structured analysis. Just don't take a politically or religiously charged stand on a topic.

Most candidates also say they stressed out unnecessarily about the presentation but in the end, it was one of the easier parts of the interview. Good luck!
