Hi,

Let me try to clear out D- It strict confidentiality applies to the patent searches not the software industry. There is a minor yet big difference in the meaning of those words.

Software developers may or may not be bound by confidentiality but patent searches are restricted because of confidentiality of the patent applications.

Hence E is the answer.

Can someone explain Q1 as both D and E, can be the answer
Hi atulpatel,

A similar argument can be made against (E) It is highly competitive and its participants are not always rewarded for their work.

Where the passage says the efforts aren't rewarded as they fail to fetch the patent..its a problem in patent granting not with the industry per se..how can we conclude industry doesnt reward the participants?

Hi,

"Unfortunately, a patent is only granted to one individual. Thus, competing developers run the risk of being deprived of the fruits of their independent labor and investments."

Helps infer the answer E

However, Answer D- "It has strict confidentiality regulations that prevent developers from sharing information about their individual projects." Cannot be inferred from the passage.

All passage talks about is "This is difficult because there are thousands of separately patentable processes in every software package and, because of confidentiality regulations affecting patent applications, patent searches do not reveal all currently existing patents."

This refers to the confidentiality of the patent process, not about common practices of sharing info in the software industry.

Hope this helps.

D is given in the paragraph itself; whereas the E has to be inferred from the last paragraph which says something like " since there are more software delvelopers working in the field , and only one patent is awarded" - from this we can understand that it is a competitive industry and not every one is rewarded for their work.
