The relationship between Fahrenheit and Celsius temperature scales can be expressed by the following formula: \(F=\frac{9}{5}C+32\) where F equals the temperature in degrees Fahrenheit and C equals the temperature in degrees Celsius. If the high and low temperatures last Tuesday were 82 degrees Fahrenheit and 64 degrees Fahrenheit, what was the difference between the high and low temperatures last Tuesday in degrees Celsius?

A. \(7\frac{7}{9}\)
B. 10
C. \(39\frac{7}{9}\)
D. 42
E. \(64\frac{2}{5}\)

We have: F = (9/5)C + 32
Note that this resembles y = mx + b where y is F, x is C and m = 9/5
Change in temperature in Fahrenheit = 82 - 64 = 18
We need to determine the change in temperature in Celsius
Since slope = (change in y) / (change in x)
We have: 9/5 = 18/(change in Celsius)
=> Change measured in Celsius = 18 * 5/9 = 10

High temperature last week:
(9/5)*C + 32 = 82
=> (9/5)*C = 50
C(high) = 250/9

Low temperature last week:
(9/5)*C + 32 = 64
=> (9/5)*C = 32
=> C(low) = 160/9

C(high) - C(low) = (250-160)/9 = 90/9=10

B) Fmax= \( \frac{9}{5} \) Cmax+32 ...(1)

Fmin= \( \frac{9}{5} \) Cmin+32 ...(2)

(1)-(2) gives us

Fmax-Fmin = \( \frac{9}{5} \) (Cmax-Cmin)

82-64= \( \frac{9}{5} \) (Cmax-Cmin)

(Cmax-Cmin)=18* \( \frac{5}{9} \) =10
