What's wrong in E?

The rise in the level of pollutants in the Yangtze River is almost the "equivalent of that in" the Ohio River.

What makes answer choice C wrong?

Can't the sentence essentially imply that the rise in pollutant level in one river is equal to the total level of pollutants in another?

Besides ignoring this assumption, there's nothing grammatically incorrect with C.

The rise in the level of pollutants in the Yangtze River is almost equivalent to the level of pollutants in the Ohio River.

(A) equivalent to the level of pollutants in
wrong comparison -- 'rise in level of pollutants' in Yangtze, to 'level of pollutants in Ohio'

(B) the same as that in the level of pollutants in
correct comparison -- 'rise in level of pollutants' in Yangtze, to 'rise in level of pollutants in Ohio'. Here, the usage of 'that' assist the purpose of correct comparison

(C) the same as the level of pollutants in
wrong comparison -- 'rise in level of pollutants' in Yangtze, to 'level of pollutants in Ohio'

(D) equal to that of
change in meaning. us of 'that' confuses comparison between 'the rise in the level' or simply 'the level'

(E) the equivalent of that in
change in meaning..similar mistake as prompt (D)

IMO, (B) should be the correct option

The rise in the level of pollutants in the Yangtze River is almost equivalent to the level of pollutants in the Ohio River.

(A) equivalent to the level of pollutants in
(B) the same as that in the level of pollutants in
(C) the same as the level of pollutants in
(D) equal to that of
(E) the equivalent of that in

Official Explanation:

Answer: B

(A) While it may appear that this sentence is testing you on the use of equivalent/equal/same this is not the case (and will rarely ever be). This sentence is actually testing you on comparison of logical items. This sentence compares the rise in the level of pollutants with the level of pollutants (and not with the rise), so is incorrect.

(B) The correct answer. That refers back to rise.

(C) This option erroneously compares rise with the level of pollutants in the Ohio River.

(D) While that can refer back to rise, we still need to mention what this rise has been in.

(E) Same as D.
