Official Explanation

The table description tells us two potentially important facts: (1) that these returns are for 2007 and (2) that the dollar amounts shown actually represent thousands of dollars (thus, the adjusted gross income for Providence County, Rhode Island, for the year was actually about $13.4 billion, not $13.4 million).

Statement 1:

To answer this question, we need to use the sorting function described in the directions to sort first by number of tax returns, then by number of exemptions. If we watch carefully as we do this, we will notice that New Haven County, CT, shifts by one position. Thus, the ranking is not exactly the same, so the statement is False.

Statement 2:

First, this statement requires us to find the counties with the greatest and fourth-greatest adjusted gross income. Using the sort function, we can quickly see that these are Fairfield County, CT, and New Castle County, DE, respectively. Next, for each of the two counties we need to get an approximate ratio of wage and salary income to the sum of dividend income and interest income. For Fairfield County, CT, wage and salary income is roughly $31 billion, whereas dividend income and interest income are roughly $1.5 billion and $2 billion, respectively. This gives us a ratio of 31 to 3.5, which is about 9 to 1, or we could simplify further with the calculator to about 8.8 to 1. For New Castle County, DE, wage and salary income is roughly $11.5 billion, whereas dividend income and interest income are roughly $0.4 billion each. A ratio of 11.5 to 0.8 simplifies to well over 10 to 1, thus making this ratio much greater (using the calculator will get you roughly 14.3 to 1). Even with rough estimation, the ratio for Fairfield County, CT, is much less than the corresponding ratio for New Castle County, DE, making the statement False.

Statement 3:

To find the adjusted gross income per tax return, we could divide the total adjusted gross income for each county by the number of returns for that county. However, as soon as we sort the data by adjusted gross income, we can see that Fairfield County, CT, has a higher adjusted total gross income than Hartford County, CT, but has fewer individual returns. This means that the adjusted gross income per tax return is higher for Fairfield County. This statement is False.
