My answer is (E). It took me 45 seconds.

(A) Lack of parallelism mainly because of the use of "changes the climate".
Besides, because the subject is plural, "changes" is incorrect.

(B) Because the subject is plural, "causes" is incorrect.

(C) "The processes are a cause"? It does not make much sense.

(D) Because the subject is plural, "is" is incorrect.

Read the question stem without " apart from destroying millions of acres of forestland"
The various processes of paper creation is singular subject hence the verb should be Causes instead of Cause
There is also a parallelism error.
E is the only option that rectifies the Subject-verb agreement and parallelism

Answer E.

Edit: I mistyped

ozone damage,(Noun) and

We can write the sentence as -

The various processes of paper creation, apart from destroying millions of acres of forestland, cause
- acid rain,
- damage to the ozone,
- changes the climate, and
- human respiratory problems.

<subject> cause <noun> is right structure.
Thus,
Causes changes the climate - is incorrect.
Cause changes TO the climate - is right.
We can eliminate choice A.

The S-V agreement for subject "processes" is necessary. We can unhesitantly eliminate choices B and D.

Note the construction in choice C
The various processes are A cause ....
<plural subject> are A <singular>

Hence, we can eliminate choice C.

Choice E is
The various processes of paper creation, apart from destroying millions of acres of forestland, cause
- acid rain,
- changes to the climate,
- ozone damage, and
- human respiratory problems.

<Plural subject> cause <list of nouns>

Thus, E is correct.

(A) cause acid rain, damage to the ozone, changes the climate, and human respiratory problems
"The various processes", a plural subject, agrees with the verb 'cause', but the list items that follows are not parallel (ozone damage, climate changes are proper adjective usage). Eliminate

(B) causes acid rain, damage to the ozone, human respiratory problems, and climate changes
"The various processes", a plural subject, does not agree with the singular verb 'causes'. Eliminate

(C) are a cause of the acid rain, damage to the ozone, human respiratory problems, and climate changes
"are a cause" usage is grammatically okay, but with list items following, it is bit awkward.
Example, The are a number of ways to solve this problem.( but it addresses only one thing solving problem).
Eliminate or keep it lower down the order.

(D) is the cause of acid rain, ozone damage, human respiratory problems, and climate changes
The plural subject "The various processes" does not agree with the singular verb 'is'. Eliminate

(E) cause acid rain, changes to the climate, ozone damage, and human respiratory problems
"The various processes", a plural subject, agrees with the plural verb 'cause' and the list items are parallel. So, the correct answer choice is E.

The various processes of paper creation, apart from destroying millions of acres of forestland, cause acid rain, damage to the ozone, changes the climate, and human respiratory problems.

(A) cause acid rain, damage to the ozone, changes the climate, and human respiratory problems

Changes the climate is the verb and disturbs the parallelism of the list

(B) causes acid rain, damage to the ozone, human respiratory problems, and climate changes
SV disagreement; Processes require plural verb

(C) are a cause of the acid rain, damage to the ozone, human respiratory problems, and climate changes
Helping verb is not required; Main verb is needed to ensure parallelism with the adverbial phrase" apart from destroying millions of acres of forestland"

(D) is the cause of acid rain, ozone damage, human respiratory problems, and climate changes

Same issues as in C + SV disagreement

(E) cause acid rain, changes to the climate, ozone damage, and human respiratory problems

Correct choice is (E)

IMO E -

(A) cause acid rain, damage to the ozone, changes the climate, and human respiratory problems - Not Parallel
(B) causes acid rain, damage to the ozone, human respiratory problems, and climate changes - The subject is Plural "the Various Processes" singular Causes is wrong.
(C) are a cause of the acid rain, damage to the ozone, human respiratory problems, and climate changes -- I dont see any issue in this , however, this answer choice is more wordy .. why not just say "cause acid rain" rather than saying are a cause of acid rain ?
(D) is the cause of acid rain, ozone damage, human respiratory problems, and climate changes-- The subject is Plural "the Various Processes" singular "is" is wrong.
(E) cause acid rain, changes to the climate, ozone damage, and human respiratory problems - this corrects all the above errors.
