The zoologist now believes that a recently located band of gorillas had probably been hiding deep in the forest to avoid their being shot by poachers.

This choice is written to sound funny via the use of the possessive + gerund structure "their being." This move is a type of trick the GMAT typically uses, making the correct answer sound funny so that you don't choose it. At the same time, this version is correct and effectively conveys a meaning that makes sense.
(b) to keep away from being
This version is grammatically correct, but it conveys a nonsensical meaning. One can keep away only from a thing, not from an event. So, it's nonsensical to say that the gorillas were seeking to "keep away from being shot."
(c) so that it would not be
The band itself would not be shot. The individual gorillas would shot. So, the use of the singular pronoun "it" does not makes sense.
(d) to avoid having been
This version does not make sense, because "having been shot" would be a past event. The gorillas can't avoid something that has already happened.
(e) so that it will not be
The band itself would not be shot. The individual gorillas would shot. So, the use of the singular pronoun "it" does not makes sense. Also, the use of the future tense "will not be shot" does not make sense. The gorillas would not have been hiding in the past to avoid being shot in the future

can someone explain why B is incorrect?
