For each of the following statements, select Yes if the statement can be shown to be true based on information in the table. Otherwise select No.

This table displays data on undeliverable mail received by a Philadelphia post office in 2010. Thus, we cannot determine whether more number of letters than packages were mailed in Philadelphia.

For each of the following statements, select Yes if the statement can be shown to be true based on information in the table. Otherwise select No.

Statement 1 : More letters than packages were mailed in Philadelphia.

The table shows un-deliverable mail (in % terms). Delivered mail (in %) can be found out.

However, no absolute values for Letters / Packages have been provided.

So, comparison of letters vis-a-vis packages can't be carried out.

NO is the answer

Statement 2: There was an upward trend over the course of the year in the number of un-deliverable packages.

Absolute Numbers (for Packages) month-wise can't be ascertained from the Table, since only Percentage values (for various months) indicated in the Table.

NO is the answer

Statement 3 : In September, more undeliverable packages than letters went through this post office.

Absolute Count for Packages and Letters not provided in the Table.

Though, Percentage value for undeliverable packages is higher than that for undeliverable letters, it can't be ascertained that more undeliverable packages than letters went through this post office.

e.g. If Total Packages = 200 & Total Letters = 500 (in September) ; then Undeliverable Packages < Undeliverable Letters
However, If Total Packages = 500 & Total Letters = 200 (in September) ; then Undeliverable Packages > Undeliverable Letters

So, it can't be ascertained that more undeliverable packages than letters went through this post office.

NO is the answer

NO, NO, NO are the answers

More letters than packages were mailed in Philadelphia. No
We don't know the absolute number of letters and packages mailed in Philadelphia, so this information cannot be determined.

There was an upward trend over the course of the year in the number of undeliverable packages. No
The information is false as if we see the trend of the undeliverable package than the trend is downward. Also since we don't know the absolute number in the months we cannot find the actual trend absolutely.

In September, more undeliverable packages than letters went through this post office. No

Official Explanation

The table doesn’t provide any information about how many total letters or packages were sent through this post office, let alone in the entire city.

No trend is visible over the course of the year.

A greater percentage of the city’s undeliverable packages went through this post office than did undeliverable letters, but not necessarily a greater number of undeliverable packages compared to letters.

What does this city rank actually denote, can anybody please explain?
Also, isn't the city share percentage mean of the total packages/letters mailed, x percentage were undeliverable, right?

I think question should be revised.

'CITY SHARE (%)' is vague.

'PACKAGES,CITY SHARE (%) can be represent 1. percentage of all mail or 2. percentage of all package.

If it means 1, Q3 should be YES.

If it means 2, Q3 should be NO.

For 2 also, can we say that absolute numbers are not given ?

1. More letters than packages were mailed in Philadelphia.

Since values are in %, and we do not know the overall total # of packages and letters received, we cannot conclusively say that more letters than packages were mailed in Phil.
HENCE NO

2. There was an upward trend over the course of the year in the number of undeliverable packages.

There is clearly no upward trend. HENCE NO.

3. In September, more undeliverable packages than letters went through this post office.

Same as 1, although percent of packages is more, we cannot say in terms of # of packages and letters if one is more than the other.

For 2 also, absolute numbers may required, right? We cannot judge based on percentage.

Since we have no concrete numbers we cannot conclude anything in this problem so all answers are no.
