Classic example of scope shift. The argument discuss about purchasing of ice cream whereas the conclusion states consumption.
Clearly Answer is A.

Homeowners aged 40 to 50 are more likely to
purchase ice cream and are more likely to purchase
it in larger amounts than are members of any other
demographic group. The popular belief that teenagers
eat more ice cream than adults must, therefore,
be false.

The argument is flawed primarily because the author

(A) fails to distinguish between purchasing and
consuming

(B) does not supply information about homeowners
in age groups other than 40 to 50

(C) depends on popular belief rather than on
documented research findings

(D) does not specify the precise amount of ice
cream purchased by any demographic group

(E) discusses ice cream rather than more nutritious
and healthful foods

Hi,

Could you explain why C is not the correct answer?

Thanks

Regardless of whether the argument is based on popular belief or documented research findings it's still comparing purchasing ice cream to eating ice cream. This makes the argument flawed.

The argument is flawed primarily because the author

(A) fails to distinguish between purchasing and consuming.....CORRECT

(B) does not supply information about homeowners in age groups other than 40 to 50...IF PEOPLE IN AGE GROUP 25-40 ARE MUCH MORE IN NUMBERS AND THEY BRING THE WEIGHTED AVERAGE OF PURCHASE DOWN...... THE DOUBT STILL REMAINS...PURCHASE Vs CONSUMPTION.....HENCE WRONG..............

(C) depends on popular belief rather than on documented research findings..WE ARE TALKING OF POPULAR BELIEF ONLY.....

(D) does not specify the precise amount of ice cream purchased by any demographic group.......WE DONT NEED THAT.....

(E) discusses ice cream rather than more nutritious and healthful foods.....SO WHAT?

The argument is flawed because it confuses purchasing and consuming. This is a scope-shift. May be people who are actually buying for their teen-agers at home.
