It is a special feature of cell aggregation in the developing nervous system that in most regions of the brain the cells not only adhere to one another and also adopt some preferential orientation.

(A) to one another and also adopt

(B) one to the other, and also they adopt

(C) one to the other, but also adopting

(D) to one another but also adopt

(E) to each other, also adopting

The question tests the usage of the idiom - Not only..but also
Answer - D

Correct idiom :
Not only.. But also
Not only.. But
Not just.. But also

C and D remains

One to the other : this is wrong
Also read the sentence skipping

Not only... But also

So C reads - - - >
It is a special feature of cell aggregation in the developing nervous system that in most regions of the brain the cells adopting some preferential orientation

Does not make sense. So answer is D

D is the answer as it uses correct form of parallelism.. not only, but also.
Agree that 'D' is the correct answer. However the the error in the sentence is not in parallelism but the error is an idiomatic error (Idioms=phrases/proverbs).
Nonnatives (and especially Indians) tend to have errors in answering such questions.

Thanks

Actually, the OP might be referring to parallelism between X and Y in the construction - - >
Not only X but also Y

(A) to one another and also adopt - not only...but also is missing

(B) one to the other, and also they adopt - not only...but also is missing

(C) one to the other, but also adopting - not only adhere ...but also adopting. Should be adopt

Not only - but also. Only C and D have this idiom.
D maintains parallelism

It is a special feature of cell aggregation in the developing nervous system that in most regions of the brain the cells not only adhere to one another and also adopt some preferential orientation.

(A) to one another and also adopt

(B) one to the other, and also they adopt

(C) one to the other, but also adopting

(D) to one another but also adopt

(E) to each other, also adopting
