Why is Q1's answer No?

Lauren can purchase all 3 titles under used books as the sum of 11, 3.99 and 2.63 is less than 25$

In case of paperback books, she can't buy 'Float-fishing Strategies' as there are zero copies of it available. From the remaining 3 titles, if she tries buying all 3, the sum exceeds 25. So, she can buy at max any 2 from these 3 titles

Question 2

Note that some rows have the same title - one in paperback and another in hardcover.

Question 1

Lauren can purchase a greater number of distinct titles if she only buys used books than if she only buys paperback books.

Sort by format. There are 3 distinct titles in Used books.
There are 4 distinct titles in paperback (of which only 3 are available since Float-Fishing has 0 copies in stock)

Hence she can purchase a greater number of distinct titles if she only buys paperback, not used books.
Select NO

Question 2.

Lauren could purchase a set of books with 4 different titles for less than $18 plus taxes.

The question is asking whether the base price of 4 distinct titles can be less than $18 (so she could purchase them in 'less than $18 + tax'
Sort by price. 4 cheapest distinct titles are Saving Fish from Drowning, Curious George Goes Fishing, Curious George at the Aquarium and Salmon.

Cost = 2.63 + 3 + 4 + 10 approx = Much more than 18

Select NO

Question 3.

Lauren could purchase 1 copy of each distinct title in the cooking and literature categories.

Sort by Section.
Cooking has 2 distinct titles - Fish (paperback) and Salmon - $10 + $10 = $20 approx
Literatur has 1 distinct title (used paperback) - $2.63
Overall cost is less than $25 so she can buy them.

Select YES

Can someone please explain Question 1 ?

IMO - for used books their are 3 distinct titles (which can be brought in $25 budget) - Saving Fish from Drowning, Fish and Curious George at the Aquarium

For new paperback book (which can be brought in $25budget) is only 1 book which is distinct - Salmon

Pls note that Q1 mentions just 'paperback', not 'new paperback'

So we need to consider both used and new paperback books

Hi vishalagarwal99

Please refer back to the table.
We know that Lauren can buy 3 used books within her $25budget but the table shows that she can also buy paperback (new/used) books within $25.

The only possible combo of 3 distinct paperbacks is: Saving fish from Drowning ($2.63), Fish ($9.98), Salmon ($9.98), the sum is <$25.
Hence, the answer is NO. I also got this question wrong due to part-1 and realised later.

Based on the book inventory provided, Lauren has a budget of $25.00 to spend on fish-themed books. Here is the detailed analysis for each statement:

Statement 1: Lauren can purchase a greater number of distinct titles if she only buys used books than if she only buys paperback books.

To determine this, we compare the count of unique titles available in stock for each format:
Used Books in Stock:
Curious George at the Aquarium (Used Hardcover)
Fish (Used Hardcover)
Saving Fish from Drowning (Used Paperback)
Total Distinct Titles: 3

Paperback Books in Stock:
Fish (New Paperback)
Salmon (New Paperback)
Saving Fish from Drowning (Used or New Paperback)
Total Distinct Titles: 3 (Note: "Float-fishing Strategies" is a paperback but has 0 copies in stock)

Since the number of distinct titles is the same (3 for both), used books do not offer a "greater number."
Answer: No

Statement 2: Lauren could purchase a set of books with 4 different titles for less than $18 plus taxes.

We identify the four cheapest distinct titles currently in stock to see if their sum is under $18:
$2.63: Saving Fish from Drowning (Used Paperback)
$2.98: Curious George Goes Fishing (New Hardcover)
$3.99: Curious George at the Aquarium (Used Hardcover)
$9.98: Fish (New Paperback) OR Salmon (New Paperback)
Total: $2.63 + $2.98 + $3.99 + $9.98 = $19.58

Hence, the minimum cost to acquire four distinct titles is $19.58, which is not less than $18.
Answer: No

Statement 3: Lauren could purchase 1 copy of each distinct title in the cooking and literature categories.

First, we identify the distinct titles in these categories and their cheapest available versions:

Cooking Titles: Fish ($9.98) and Salmon ($9.98)
Literature Titles: Saving Fish from Drowning ($2.63)
Total: $9.98 (Fish) + $9.98 (Salmon) + $2.63 (Saving Fish) = $22.59

Lauren’s total budget is $25.00. Since $22.59 is within her budget, she can afford to buy one copy of every title in these two categories.

Fair enough. Float Fishing has no copies in stock so only 3 of the 4 paperbacks are available for buying (added this in the post above). Though the answer stays the same since Lauren cannot purchase more "used" titles than "paperback" titles. Yes, this includes the $25 limit. Include the "used paperback" instead of "new paperback" for Saving Fish from Drowning in the "paperback" group. Total will be less than $25.
