This was a confusing one for me. No very apparently correct options that I could spot. So I tried using elimination. I came up with D as an answer. Not sure if it is correct though. Here is my process-

Option A: While this does make a case for cross-functional teams, it talks about the benefit of cross-functional (CF) teams to increase interdepartmental communication. It does not really talk about increase in innovation as talked about in the conclusion. So I chose to eliminate this.

Option B: This talks more about firms in a specifically characterized industry. While those firms who are in industries that have fast paced innovation are more likely to be using CF, it does not actually prove that the CF teams are making the firm innovate better. I chose to eliminate this as there is a faulty cause-effect relationship that is being established here.

Option C: This is weakening the conclusion clearly. It says the CF teams are not observed to be better performing on innovation than single department teams. This is directly opposite of what the conclusion is. Hence, eliminate.

Option D: This one did not seem to be the correct option on the first reading honestly. However, it was between this and option E, and this fit the bill better. This tells us that even if we gave single department teams the access to the tools that generally make CF teams better at innovations, they still tend to not perform better than other single department teams. This shows us that the CF teams are actually inherently better in some way. Hence, it actually supports the conclusion. I went for this after eliminating E.

Option E: This talks more about the background of a specific individual. It does not really compare CF teams to single department teams. A single/few individuals might have worked in a different department in the past. It does not mean that they would be able to bring in the same core skills and tools that make CF teams better as per the stem. Hence, I chose to eliminate this.

IMO E

A= The argument talks about innovation, expertise etc, whereas this option talks about interdepartmental communication - incorrect
B= This option just states which firms will be likely using cross functional teams vs firms evolving gradually, but not an absolute strenghtener of the consultant argument- Incorrect
C=This is favouring single dept team with more work experience over multi dept team - Weakner- incorrect
D=This is comparing single dept teams based on more problem solving & heuristic knowledge- Irrelevant
E= Correct. This shows that within a single dept also if we have memebers who workd in different teams is more innovative than single dept with team members working in same dept.

So the logic here is that due to people coming from different departments, they communicate information about different departments and get observed along with observing others and learning from each other. Along with cognitive tools, this makes the overall team more innovative.

Of all options, D clearly tells u that single dept. teams who receive briefings are not more innovative on average than single dept teams who receive no such briefings. This proves that merely hearing doesnt help. Thats y cross functioning teams are better.

1.option a just denotes a relationship among employee , isn't related to innovation tactics .


2.option b tells some rapidly growing industries use cross functional team , and some firms doesn't use this approach . not related to the argument .


3.option c actually undermines the argument because it tells us how personal work experience and education effect more on innovation than that of single department teams .


4.if option d is true , it perfectly supports this arguent . It explains how solo exposure to tools doesnt bolster innovation . Actual invention happens when employee work together in a team , they learn from each other & this type of group interaction is necessary to increase new innovation ideas.
When employee observes others working in overt approach and vice versa , observational learning happens similiar to Bandura's theory of social learning model.Team based project is essential to discuss , generate and modify new ideas which is not possible while working alone .


5.option d simply says that employee's experience is the actual determinant of innovation whereas according to the the consultant prioritizes group based interaction aka teamwork .

i am going with option d.
shows tools aren't enough; relationships matter.
a incorrect - this says only communication improves, argument is about innovation.
b incorrect - tells where cross functional teams are used and not portrays that they cause greater innovation.
c incorrect - weakens the conclusion.
e incorrect - talks about individual employee having previous exp, does not support causality of argument.

Very lengthy and tricky question.

Lets break down argument:
The consultant says that cross functional teams reason for innovations are exposure to broader mental models and observing and being observed by cross functional experts, not just the exposure to breadth of tools itself, which can be explained to anyone without giving other exposures of actually working and experiencing real time problem solving among experts

What can strengthen the argument. Identifying no other reason for this superior innovation.
Lets follow process of elimination
A- This can be easily ruled out since it is not even talking about the main conclusion of the argument and no talk of innovation. Just saying interdepartmental communication is beneficial but do it helps in innovation. NO talk about that
B- It is talking about a particular kind of industry follows cross-functional setup but no general reason for its benefits in terms of they are innovative which arguments talks about- ruled out
C- This is even undermining the argument that cross function team has any advantage. This is easy to rule out
D- This is giving a possible explanation why working in cross functional setup is the reason behind reaping those innovative benefits. Even if team formed from single department are briefed about the problem solving models and methods employed in other's function e, they do not become innovative than those single department people who are not briefed at all. That means, without working in cross functional setup, merely being explained ,as we discussed in problem dissection, there is no impact on innovative mindset. It only comes from working in those setups and experiencing them.. Good choice for our answer
E- This is also a good explanation as it says team consisting of members who worked in multiple department earlier are more innovative than team consisting of who worked in single department. confusing

Out of D and E I choose D, because D directly rules out alternative explanation that even briefing theoretically about other departments model can make team innovative and it is the working experience and learning mental models in that setup that makes them innovative While, E just do not overrule this. It strengthens in terms of experience is valuable but other factors also like briefing of other department's function can also me you innovative. This E can't rule out

This is a strengthen questions

I am going with B, even though it doesn't seem strong

of the options, A and B looks similar on first glance, and E looks pretty much like the answer, but i think E is a trap as it talks about a person or a group that worked in different departments prior than getting different background people together as referred in the passage

and why not A, because it talks about higher rates of interdepartmental communication, but from the conclusion of passage we see that Cross function teams will lead to wide innovations, which isn't the case with A

but B indirectly talks about innovation, firms that constantly rely on innovation, do better by relying on Cross Function Teams which supports

why not C and D
C - doesn't really strengthen
and D focusses on the wrong group and doesn't include or talk about Cross Function Teams at all

final Ans - B

A. Rate of communication is irrelevant. The question is about how innovative cross functional teams are why they are innovative.
B. This doesn't strenghen why cross functional teams are more innovative. Likelihood of choosing cross functional teams over others is out of scope.
C. Nope, this goes against what the argument says. The argument says that cross functional teams are generally more innovative. This says they are not.
D. Yup this work. This say that teams cannot become innovative if they are from single departments and dont have first hand experience and breadth of exposure.
E. Previous work experience is out of scope.

The argument is that cross-functional teams are more innovative because members work directly with colleagues from other departments, gaining exposure to different ways of thinking and seeing those approaches in action.

To strengthen the argument, we need evidence that supports this explanation, not just observation.

IMO - Option D supports the mechanism by showing that simply learning about other departments is not enough; direct collaboration is what matters.

Looking at other options:

B - Does not show that cross-functional teams cause innovation
C - Says cross-functional teams are not innovative
E - Supports broader experience, but not the consultant's key point about ongoing transaction

B. Does not discuss exposure to mental models or observe interaction with colleagues
C. This weakens argument. If there is no difference between single department teams

D. BEST ANSWER. This strengthens argument. Simply getting briefing about other problem solving methods is not enough. They need to work directly with experts and observe them. Improving requires firsthand collaborative experience.

E. Good answer that says people working in multiple departments are more innovative. However does not specify why they are more innovative. Needs to say they are more innovative because of cross functional interaction and observation of experts.
