Can anyone tell what is the subject and verb in the option B because it used "as". I am little bit confused. I eliminated this option because of no verb usage.

In B the subject is ‘it’ (leprosy) and the verb ‘persists’; Please note they are not part of the issue here. The issues are 1. The referent for the relative pronoun ‘which’, 2. Llism of participles ‘spreading and infecting’ 3. Idiom of ‘in the popular imagination’ vs. ‘to the popular imagination’ and 4. The use of ‘like vs. as’. In questions of the use of ‘like vs. as’, you must be clear about what follows these words, whether a noun or noun phrase or a clause. In some cases, when the word ‘as’ is used as a preposition, then it may not be followed by a clause, as in choice B

B. Spreading and infecting are parallel. 'persist as' is correct.

in SC, following these steps:
1/ highlight the main S and V, along with connecting words
2/ main noun will summarize the main idea.
3/ look for grammar issues within the line.

This strategy will help test takers to pay attention to the right detail.

A) as a kind of rampant, uncontrollably spreading plague in the popular imagination, which infects--- Imagination, which infects – wrong reference of relative pronoun

B) in the popular imagination as a kind of rampant plague, spreading uncontrollably and infecting------- spreading and infecting- good llism – correct choice

C) in the popular imagination like a kind of rampant plague that uncontrollably spreads and infecting ------- spreads and infecting bad llism

D) like a kind of rampant plague to the popular imagination, uncontrollably spreading and infecting to ---- plague to the popular— improper idiom. Right idiom is in the popular imagination

E) to the popular imagination as a kind of plague does, which spreads uncontrollably and infects ------ to the popular imagination—wrong idiom;
------ plague does, which spreads. ---- no proper referent for the relative pronoun which

Because 'as' compares verb and 'as a kind of rampant plaque' shows 'as' followed by a noun 'kind of plaque', shouldn't we eliminate B.
