Actually, stanford no.1 was the easiest to me.
Questions like "how did you persuade someone" are really difficult to me. That's why I decided not to apply for MIT.

good point. my guess: cut down to 1000 best apps. eliminate 300 from crappy interviews, left with 700. choose 450 based on class diversity. but that's speculation on my part. no clue how they actually choose.

Getting the interview means you're admissible based on stats, work experience, goals, recs, and personal characteristics. I don't think Stanford is interviewing people that are marked for the ding pile anyways. My guess is that the interview is mostly used to assess fit. While some people will flame out spectacularly, I think others can have perfectly good interviews but just not be the right fit.
I think a lot of us have this perception that the interview is the final decision maker at all schools when for the most part it is not. The interview is added back into the application and the whole package is reviewed once again. Most times the interview simply fills in the blanks that the application doesn't cover. I wouldn't call Stanford disingenuous simply because the interview alone can't tip the scales in a candidates favor.
Almost gave up and added a note saying "please view on BW monitor" for the optional info/essay.
