I have a question about the fellowship that maybe you guys can help me with. Going by the previous couple of posts, if it's true that McCombs does not often give fellowships to applicants who list them lower than first or second, then what about this scenario. Let's say I applied to 4 schools and ranked them in this order: 1) Haas, 2) Stern, 3) McCombs, 4) Wisconsin. I haven't heard anything from Haas or Stern, invited to interview with McCombs and feel good about interviewing with Wisconsin. If I get dinged from Haas and Stern, when it comes time for the draft, will McCombs know that Haas and Stern dinged me and then view themselves as my defacto remaining best option and possibly offer me a fellowship? Or will they not know that Haas and Stern dinged me and only know that Haas and Stern did not decide to offer me a fellowship and still view themselves in third position? Finally, if I get dinged from Haas and Stern, accepted to McCombs and Wisconsin, is there a chance that McCombs and Wisconsin both decide to not offer me a fellowship?

I agree with what Method said.

To add, if Haas and Stern ding you and you're accepted by McCombs and Wisconsin, there is a chance that McCombs and Wisconsin will both not offer you the fellowship, but it's probably 50/50. If you have solid stats and made good impressions on the schools it's possible that one of them, especially Wisconsin, will step up and offer it to you. If you only get into one of the schools you might have some worrying to do because that school would have no incentive to offer the fellowship to you. They would know you already have no choice but to go there.

Thanks to Method and Mixed for your responses. Method: so when draft day comes, all the schools will know what schools accepted/dinged you?

I concur with what everyone said. In your scenerio, Texas will only feel strongly about offering you a fellowship if your candidacy is perfect for them AND you have other options or if they are just not blown away by the apps that placed them in the 1st or 2nd position. Schools that are not as caught up in how they are ranked will try to snipe candidates from other schools with financial packages that make their select more alluring. Wisconsin is know to try that.

Yup, all the schools go to the draft and see what position they are ranked in by all the applicants. They treat this like the real Nba draft and the first positions go first in a public setting. Next the 2nd positions and so on. Sounds cool and fun for them but sucks for us.

To the full extent, I don't know. But using our hypothetical, if McCombs had first crack in the draft room to offer you a fellowship, then the cat's out of the bag: you didn't get into Haas and Stern.

wow- i wish i would have found this forum sooner. I feel like i've been going through this process all alone. it would have been great to have your insights. I applied to 5 consortium schools- Haas, Yale, USC, UCLA and Emory. So far I interviewed with Yale and have recieved interview requests from USC and Emory. No word from Haas and UCLA... and i've all but given up at this point. I've also applied to Owen, and am considering applying to Wisconsin- as I am a wisconsin resident.

I didn't realize the ranking order was so important, I do know someone who went through the process last year, he got into all three of his schools but was awarded the the fellowship to his 3rd choice.

At this point i just want tMarch to come so that i can sleep normally again.

Welcome to the forum, kheti. Congrats on the interview invites you've had so far! We hope that you'll update you profile with your stats and the schools you're applying to for tracking.

If you don't mind sharing (and your friend doesn't mind), which school did he rank 3rd that ended up offering the fellowship to him? Was he accepted by his first or second school but then passed by them for the fellowship? I'm always curious to see how the different programs react to not having been ranked #1 or #2.

Thanks for joining the forum and we hope you stay active through this grueling process!

Sure- He applied to Dartmouth, Yale and CMU (Tepper) he was admitted to all three, but the first two opted not to award fellowship. So he went to Tepper.

I'll go ahead and update my stats but here's the basics: 690 GMAT, 3.45 GPA- Dual Degree- Business Admin and Spanish Language from a state school, 5years work exp in nonprofit management.

I guess the deal is to try to get admitted into several schools and then let them fight for you!!! Sounds good to me, I will keep working on it.

Turn off the marketing communications. It will make your life so much better.

Hopefully the next email from Yale will be the interview invite. Good luck.

On the last line of the email there is a hyperlink called "unsubscribe." If you dont see it, make sure all images are being displayed. In gmail, under the subject line you can click on display all images. Once you do that, check again. I hope that helps.

Goodluck with Yale. I haven't heard from them. Since decision day is so close (Feb 24th), I have decided to plan for the worst. If I hear good news, I would be pleasantly surprised. If I hear bad news, I would be mentally prepared for it. I got three rejections this week and I didnt feel bad at all. Just my 2 cents.

Danjohn 3 dings! Whew! Which school?
The good news is everyone who gets an MBA usually enjoys the school they ultimately attend, at least in my experience. Except HBS I know people who went there and hated it, but they suffered through and enjoy having HBS on their resumè.

I got dings from HBS, Columbia, and Booth this week without interviews. I have had interviews with Cornell and Dartmouth; and I have interviews lined up with Wharton, Kellogg, Darden, Fuqua, and Emory. I received my Wharton invite today about 13 minutes after my Columbia rejection.

The good thing is that you are getting the interview invites... that tells me that your profile is solid enough to get you the invite... I think you may have to elevate your interview and facetime.... that seems to be the only thing holding you back... here is wishing you the best on your remaining interviews...
