Two of the hints that helped me determine the answer were the verb tense of establish and developed, and the modifier strike in adverb form.
But can someone explain why it is wrong to remove "the basis"?

D and E use striking instead of strikingly so they are out
Between A, B and C, the choice is between establishes and established.
Even though is was written in the past, it still IS an early and original work that establishes. So B is out
Between A and C, I eliminated C for 2 reasons: One, it removed 'basis'. It establishes the basis not the notion. Secondly, since establishes a basis is in present tense, develops should also be in present tense. C changes develops to developed.
So the answer is A
