FROM Tuck Admissions Blog: Veterans Day and the Common Good: An Opportunity for Reflection

By Dan Linge T'16

Dan hails from Wenatchee, Wash. and attended the University of Rochester in Rochester, N.Y. on a Naval ROTC scholarship completing majors in political science and history. He served for nearly three years in various roles on an Arleigh Burke class destroyer out of Bath, Maine and San Diego, Calif. He then spent 18 months as an operations and exercise planner working with foreign navies throughout Asia while assigned to Destroyer Squadron Fifteen in Yokosuka, Japan. After a nine month stint studying at the Department of Defense Language Institute in Monterey, Calif., he worked nearly two years as an exchange officer embedded with a squadron of Fast Attack Boats in the German Navy in Warnemuende, Germany.

During my seven years in the Navy, I rarely reflected on what service to country was and what it meant to be a veteran. I approached my role as a job that I was very proud to do, but I didn’t take much time to dwell on what it meant. However, I was often aware that being a service member impacted others’ perceptions of me. From the opinions held by foreign populations abroad to the perspectives of friends and acquaintances here at home, there is a wide range of attitudes toward the merit of US military service. At times I was self-conscious about the amount of “hero-worship” I observed whenever a patriotic holiday would roll around; at others, there were moments I’d become furious when I felt people did not respect the gut-wrenching sacrifices so many veterans have made.

In all of these situations though, I rarely viewed myself as a “true” veteran. Rather, I often felt more like someone who had experienced the veteran culture but just didn’t have the bona fides to truly be counted among it. Yeah sure, I’d been on a couple deployments and served in various countries around the world, but my work had rarely, if ever, been a matter of life and death. Because of this, I discounted the sacrifices and value that veterans like myself contributed to the common good.

This outlook began to transform when I began the MBA application process. Through speaking with both veteran students and admissions officers, I started to build a better picture of how veterans are viewed by most in the business world. It’s not just about how many times you’ve been shot at or whether you’ve had to sleep out in the field for weeks on end. While those sorts of experiences can be undeniably transformative, MBA programs and employers are looking far beyond them. Because they operate in an environment where goals are collective and individual accomplishments are subordinate, veterans are presented with unique opportunities to develop skills and perspectives that encourage examining problems with an eye on the greater good. They are willing to make hard decisions and personal sacrifices to ensure the success of the task at hand.

Since arriving at Tuck just a few months ago, I’ve been surrounded by a truly incredible cadre of veterans. Their experiences run the gamut from special-forces operators to artillery logisticians to intelligence professionals to nuclear reactor supervisors to fighter pilots, to nearly everything in between. Regardless of their backgrounds though, the most common trait I have observed among them is their deep commitment to the success of the teams and environments they have been a part of.

Tuck is renowned for placing an extraordinary emphasis on altruism and community. Correspondingly, as a veteran at Tuck, I have found it to be a welcoming and nurturing environment that values veterans’ service not only for specific acts and hardships endured, but also for the grander sacrifice and commitment which it represents.

This Veterans Day here at Tuck, I’m finally spending time contemplating what it means to be a veteran by reflecting on the life-altering, cumulative sacrifices so many incredible veterans have made throughout the years. Further, I’m incredibly thankful to learn in a place where the essence of these values is celebrated all year round. This environment has reinforced within me what being a veteran is all about and even reminded me a bit about what Veterans Day was designed to recognize: “patriotism, love of country, and a willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.”

I just received an interview invite!!! I'm so excited!!! :-D :-D

Sad I won't be able to visit campus... I really wish I could go to Hanover, and also I feel that no matter how hard you try, something gets lost in a video interview. But, obviously ecstatic to have the opportunity regardless!

Can people who have been interviewed (by invitation) confirm if there application status changed from "Submitted" to "Complete" ? Want to check if there is still any for us who haven't yet heard from Tuck.
I'd assume that there would be a few. Candidates whose files have been reviewed and Tuck didn't feel confident about; ding is certainly not the opinion, but nor is acceptance.

I interviewed on 8th by invitation and my app status still says submitted. I don't think it reflects anything

Oh, yes, and I checked my application right after receiving my invitation, and it still just reads 'submitted' as well. Which, I'll admit, caused me to go back and re-read the email just to make sure I hadn't imagined it!

FROM Tuck Admissions Blog: Tuck Students Learn More about Wide Range of Companies This Fall

This fall’s company briefings are almost complete and so far we’ve heard from an impressive array of companies!

Every fall, Tuck hosts a series of company briefings that expose students to different industries, companies, and career opportunities. Representatives from over 100 companies from around the
United States and the globe that span a breadth of industries offer more information about how their company operates and the strategy behind what they do.

After briefings, companies often host open exchanges, including informal meet-and-greet sessions where students have the opportunity to speak individually with visiting employees. Company briefings are held primarily in the fall before on-campus recruitment begins.

Companies typically have four principal goals of the company briefings for a company:

• To share information about a company and the culture.

• Share information about the roles they are hiring for.

• Introduce members of the company and the team recruiting Tuck students.

• Get to know Tuck students interested in the firm.

Students benefit from being able to spend significant time with these professionals and truly learn about their respective organizations. Companies will often host other events around company briefings that enable 1:1 interaction with students including office hours, round tables discussing a relevant topic, and/or social events that include gatherings at Murphy’s, wine tastings, and more.

Tuck greatly benefits from its strong alumni network. Many of the visiting employees from companies participating in company briefings are actually Tuck alumni. These alumni enjoy visiting Tuck with a “recruiter” hat on. Their visit also gives them the opportunity to visit friends and colleagues, professors, and administrators who were an integral part of their lives while at Tuck.

Companies that visited this fall include:

  • Google
  • JP Morgan
  • General Mills
  • McKinsey
  • Colgate
  • Warby Parker
  • Under Armour
  • New Balance
  • Keurig, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters
  • Siemens
  • Goldman Sachs
  • Barclays
  • Eaton
  • Amazon
  • Fidelity
  • Bain
  • CVS Caremark
  • Microsoft
  • And many others

According to GMAC, "Once your scores are available, Additional Score Reports are sent within seven calendar days; non-U.S. test takers should allow for a longer delivery time." However mine were delivered the very next business day. I'd advise you to talk to GMAC regarding the status of your report before you proceed with a new order.

Saw your location is Singapore, i am also from Singapore. I was there for one and half day in Sep. It was exam time then, so i did not have the class visit. If you booked class visit, I believe it will be a good experience. Other than that, I walked around the town, including campus and stores on the main street. Many facilities in campus are accessible, so I visited libraries and some classrooms. Talking to Tuck students will be very beneficial if you want to know more about the stories here.

Good luck!! Let us know how it goes.

I'm doing Skype too. I just can't make it out there within a week. My interviewer emailed me and I picked Monday, but I haven't heard confirmation from her yet. It is a second-year student.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes! My interview felt like it went really well. I'm no expert, but I've sat on in for 12 hours now, and I can't think of anything really that I wish I'd done differently. Which is a stark contrast from my Yale interview, where I walked away immediately thinking of things I wished I'd said!

The set ups of the two also couldn't be more different really. With Yale, I interviewed in person (in London) with a member of the admissions committee. Yale's format is set questions that feel somewhat rigid and formal. Whereas, my Tuck interview was over Skype with a 2nd year student. I'm sure she was asking me prescribed questions, but it felt much more natural and conversational than my previous experience.

My advice to others interviewing would be simply to relax. I know it's easier said than done, but the interviewers seem to genuinely just be trying to get to know you. There are no trick questions or attempts to confuse you. Just take a deep breath, and be yourself!

All the best to you, bml1105, and to anyone else interviewing... and here's hoping I get to meet some of you in person in Hanover some day!
