I have the same doubt as martin has.

When there are more than 1 grammatically correct sentences, the one that matches in meaning with the original sentence should be selected (if the original sentence does not convey an absurd meaning).

just as answer choice D changes the meaning with "decided to provide", so to does answer choice C when it lists "by airlifting food from nearby Kenya to remote airfields in the interior of Somalia for distribution, bypassing congested ports and reducing the need to send out convoys"

Those 3 verbs could be taken to mean parallel actions no?

In the original sentence, the meaning is that the US decided to airlift the food in part so that they could bypass the ports and reduce the need to send convoys (the original includes "thus").

Is this slight change in meaning in answer choice C less egregious than the meaning change in D, and thus C is the right choice?

Thanks!

I also have the same concern as Brules. C distorts the meaning.

i agree that airlifting...., bypassing...., and reducing are in paralell form, but by airlifting they are bypassing thus reducing the need to send out a convoy.

I think that "C" changes the meaning of the sentence "forcing" a parallel form and that "D" is a better choice

I think this is a poor-quality question. Hi guys!
The statement of this question and the letter a is different.
"relief efforts were provided by the United
States to assist by.." x "relief was provided by the United States by.."

To all the Verbal experts,

I have issues understanding parallelism in answer choice C.
Responding to the worsening famine, the United States provided relief by airlifting food from nearby Kenya to remote airfields in the interior of Somalia for distribution, bypassing congested ports and reducing the need to send out convoys

If I break this sentence, it would be

Responding to the worsening famine (Modifier)
the United States (Modified noun) provided relief by
--airlifting food from nearby Kenya to remote airfields in the interior of Somalia for distribution
--bypassing congested ports
--reducing the need to send out convoys

If these three are parallel, the sentence should still makes sense if I remove any parallel entity.
These come out as three ways in which US provided relief. IMO it doesn't convey a logical meaning.
For this reason, I discarded this and chose D which did come out with a different meaning but was logical and grammatically correct.

I am really struggling with SC, and want to get my fundamentals into position. Please correct me if I am wrong in my approach w.r.t. parrallelism or this question.
