In E, did anyone find that the comma in " Although, the value of science and technological information...." reads weirdly? The sentence reads much better without the comma. Is there any technical rule for this kind of thing?

Yep, you're right. The comma is incorrect. Seems like I see a lot of transcription errors involving commas.

The value of science and technological information are already well-established in the fields of health, agriculture and natural resource management, but issues like climate change, food security and biotechnology have recently attracted a high profile in international policy debates of sustainable development and poverty reduction.

A. The value of science and technological information are already well-established in the fields of health, agriculture and natural resource management, but issues like climate change, food security and biotechnology have recently attracted a high profile in international policy debates of sustainable development and poverty reduction.

B. The value of science and technological information is already well-established in the fields of health, agriculture and natural resource management, but issues such as climate change, food security and biotechnology have recently attracted a high profile in international policy debates of sustainable development and poverty reduction.

C. Even if the value of science and technological information is already well-established in the fields of health, agriculture and natural resource management, issues like climate change, food security and biotechnology have recently attracted a high profile in international policy debates of sustainable development and poverty reduction.

D. Although, the value of science and technological information are already well-established in the fields of health, agriculture and natural resource management, issues such as climate change, food security and biotechnology are recently attracting the high profile in international policy debates on sustainable development and poverty reduction.

E. Although, the value of science and technological information is already well-established in the fields of health, agriculture and natural resource management, issues such as climate change, food security and biotechnology have recently attracted a high profile in international policy debates about sustainable development and poverty reduction.

Split#1: The value of ... information IS/ARE
THE VALUE is singular, so verb should be singular. So , A & D are out.

Split#2: like/such as
Such as used to list example. So, A & C are out

Split#3: although/but
Considering the meaning of sentence, using BUT makes no sense. So. The correct answer is E

Such as A, B, C, and D. – CORRECT.

Though i chose E, is't debate about idiomatically incorrect. Is't debate over the correct idiomatic phrase.

some of the moderators pls edit the question.

E cannot be correct because of the comma after although.
among other choices, B is the correct, from the grammatical point of view, choice.
Nevertheless, I believe the contrast should be: although smth, the result is this - a structure present in E. I dismissed E only because of the comma, and I hate making mistakes because of the errors, which only make people go nuts when they select the answer choice.
bb - if possible, pls have it corrected.

Hi daagh

I was stuck between B and E. As "BUT" and "Although" both can be used to show contrast, usage of "Although" in this sentence sound better and go well with the meaning. I still did not pick E because of the following comparison:
Although X, Y
Although the value of science.... , issues such as climate change..

Are "the value of science" and "issues such as climate.." comparable??

Thanks :)

Hi
Actually I don't see a comparison involved in E. It only says that in spite of very good understanding about the S&T in the areas of health, agriculture, and resources management, still there are a lot of grey areas and hence many debates are going on. Health care relates to Biotech, Climatic change is about resources management and food security is about agriculture.

The only sore point about E is the unwarranted use of the comma after although; Of course, we can temporarily console ourselves by saying that GMAT does not test punctuation. Sometimes, we have to settle with the best among the lot and that way, we can pass E.

Whatever it meaning is the minimum takeaways from this example are about

1. The use of the correct idiomatic usage of 'debates of', debates about, or 'debates on'
2. SV number error
3. Wrong use of 'like' for examples.

What more can we ask?

comma in E leaves the subordinate clause starting with although without a verb. this is not correct; in this case, yes, punctuation does have a major impact on the structure of the sentence. I eliminated E just by looking at the first part of the sentence. since it was incorrect, I dismissed it.
if taking into consideration all errors, there is no correct answer here.

I believe this is the origin of the sentence:

The value of science and technology is already well established in the fields of health, agriculture and natural resource management, but issues such as climate change, food security and biotechnology have recently attracted a high profile in international policy debates about sustainable development and poverty reduction.

B - has the idiom incorrectly used
E - changes the meaning by making the first part a subordinate clause, although the original sentence clearly states what is what. Moreover, the comma after although has a huge impact.

A – ‘like’ is not to be used for examples.
B – ‘debates’ of’ should be ‘debates about’
C – Same as A
D –SV disagreement. ‘Value’ is singular, should be paired with ‘is’ not ‘are’.
E – Correct

eliminating A,C,D was a cakewalk.
debate of vs debate about - the correct idiomatic construction is what made the difference.
