Hello there, killersword.

Your GMAT and SAT scores look satisfactory. Your work experience also demonstrates strong storytelling potential. Your career objectives appear to be realistic and organic as well.

Looking at your goals, I suggest you go for an MBA. But, first, let me provide you with the overall eligibility criteria of some top MBA B Schools that you can target:
Duke Fuqua Daytime MBA:
To graduate, students must complete at least 79-course credits (or 65-course credits if in a dual degree program) and have a GPA of at least 3.0. Students may be dismissed from the program if they fail to make satisfactory progress toward this goal. The following two criteria define good progress:
Students must complete a minimum of 45-course credits in the first academic year of the program and 79-course credits by the end of the second academic year. Courses designated as required must be taken at the designated times unless the student has earned an exemption from the course, either by receiving an administrative exemption based on prior coursework or passing an exemption exam.
Students’ grades must exceed a minimum threshold defined by the following “strike system.” Students receive one strike for each F they earn and 0.5 strikes for each LP; these strikes accumulate through the program.
Oxford University:
You must have a 2.1 (3.5 GPA) or equivalent.
A GMAT/GRE score is required to submit your application. The quantitative scores should be in the 85th percentile, the verbal scores in the 80th percentile, and the analytical writing score should be at least 5.
If you are not from an English-speaking country, you must take the TOEFL or IELTS test.
Your leadership qualities are your most important feat, which is quite evident in your extracurricular activities; this will make your admission even smoother; you need to make sure you mention these points in your essay.

If you want to know which school is a better fit for you or get a detailed analysis of your profile, get in touch with our study abroad experts.

Hi,

Some points that I could suggest for a profile evaluation based on the information you have provided here:
1.Your academic profile is diverse, which is definitely a positive.
2.A GMAT score which is close to or above the school average (710/713) would add strength to your academic profile.
3. With a work experience of 10 years, you should focus on demonstrating your professional agility.
4.The extracurricular engagements seem outdated. Being involved in passion projects or a having multiple areas of interest would be a good addition to your profile.
5. You should introspect more on what are the key skills you have gained so far and align your goals accordingly. Program management or product management?

All the best!

VirenShah hope this finds you well.

Given the somewhat common nature of your profile and the very competitive IT demographic, I recommend that you add IIM B and C, as well as SP Jain, PGPX to your list of target programs. To make it difficult for IIM A and ISB to reject you, you must offer a strong standing in all aspects, stressing your leadership experience, professional growth, incremental responsibilities with every project, strong social impact leadership experience, and extensive research on goals. A GMAT score of 700 or higher will significantly boost your chances.

Best wishes

Hello VirenShah,

Your non-engineering education, specializing in Agriculture and then transitioning into a finance role by doing a master's, will be valued by both ISB and IIM. You are an example of a 'diversity' student B-School looks for; planning to write GMAT and aiming for 700 is a good thought. It will give a boost to your overall profile.

Although your interest and contribution to social work and sports are good, they come with expiry dates, which is not good. Your short-term goal looks achievable but needs to be communicated more in-depth.

You can register for a profile evaluation with us. We wish you all the best with your GMAT score.

Regards,

VirenShah hope this finds you well

I really beg to somewhat vary with the past evaluations of the diversity component of your profile in order to assist you be better equipped to handle the challenging admissions process. Colleges won't see your undergraduate degree in Agro tech as a sign of diversity unless you have something going on in your work experience that builds on the "differentiating" component. If you hold a master's in finance and worked in an IT company doing duties that were the same as what most IT professionals do, you would match a fairly typical profile. On the contrary, the schools view abrupt changes in academic and professional direction as indicators for weak planning (although this may not be the case for IIM, ISB owing to this commonality in India).

I recommend that you add IIM B and C, as well as XLRI and SP Jain PGPX to your list of target programs. You must provide a solid standing in all areas, highlighting your leadership experience, professional progress, incremental responsibilities with every project, strong social impact leadership experience, and in-depth goal research to make it tough for IIM A and ISB to reject you. A GMAT score of 700 or higher will considerably increase your prospects and you should give your complete focus on that at the moment. In parallel, work on creating a solid Goals narrative (what industry, what kind of PM, solving what kind of problems and why?)

Best wishes

Hello phoenix2194,

Below is our evaluation of your profile.

GMAT: Excellent
Academics: On an extremely average side (Tier 2 /3 college with below 70%)

Work Experience: Work with PSU demonstrates that you have definitely handled things at huge scale. Additionally, understanding of the energy market, and its impact over the recent years will be good for the peer-to-peer learning of the cohort. In case you have been involved with strategic work such as - completing a Feasibility study of New LPG distributorship in a needed area or as per public demand etc., do mention that explicitly in your application. In case you have managed sales targets and worked on demand generation, do also bring that across in your application.

Extra Curricular: Below Average
You will need to showcase the work-related CSR engagements you have been part of as meaningful EC. Also, try to bring out leadership through some other position of responsibility at work / college etc.

Goals: Product Management as post MBA goal is something that can go against you a lot and we would urge you to reevaluate it. While a lot of tech / business-oriented PMs do not have hard core programming / technical backgrounds, they can demonstrate some sort of experience related to tech products (development, design, sales, advisory etc.). Since in your case, you won’t be able to demonstrate any such transferrable skillset for PM based on your past, it will be hard justification. It is better to talk about something that has a higher likelihood of happening. Ex. You getting into a Consulting role.

I am an ISB alum CO15, and have been guiding applicants in their admission journeys for the last 6+ years. Feel free to reach out if you seek professional
guidance with regards to creating a high impact application.

Cheers and Best of Luck!!

Hi there,

Overall, thats an interesting profile. Your academic scores and the Gmat score tick the boxes.
The work experience sounds interesting, however you will have to make it relevant to the MBA applications. The work is technical, which is alright and not a deterrent. What you must do through the application is show your leadership skills. Within your technical role, how did you use skills such as influencing, motivating, persuading, taking initiatives, driving change to create impact? Follow that up with $$ impact, which helps to ascertain your business sense.
A lot of applicants in technical roles dont show their leadership skills, which is not helpful, so take note of this.
The other important thing for you would be to present well thought out career goals. What do you want to do after the MBA and what is the passion behind it? Link up your past, present and future so that the goals make sense while also being aspirational.
Your extra-curricular activities sound to be sparse. It seems like you haven't done anything on this front since college. This wont be a game changer for you, but that said, ECAs are desirable as they also reflect an applicant's inclination to contribute to their bschool.
Feel free to reach out for a more indepth evaluation.

Mechanical engineer working in PSU, in direct sales!

I would not suggest Product Management phoenix2194.

Chances in ISB: No one can predict at this stage, but chances of an interview call are excellent (obviously if the application is in a decent shape).

Hey, what options do you suggest as career goals apart from Consulting and Sales based on my background?

Dear phoenix2194,

For a 1 year MBA, the idea is to mention a career goal, which you can realistically achieve based on NOT just the MBA program, but by also leveraging some transferrable skillsets from your past experience.

Follow the rule, X+Y=Z ;
where
X: List of All skillsets you currently possess
Z: List of ALL skill sets you require to succeed in your post-MBA career goal
Y : List of ALL skillsets you hope to gain from the MBA program
Ideally for a 1 year program (typically doesn't an Internship), Y <= 50% of Z i.e you already have half of the skillsets from the past to achieve success in future

Try to frame multiple Zs (Z1, Z2, Z3...) and gauge how is the Y1, Y2, Y3 varying.

Hope this helps!!

Cheers and Best of Luck
