In 2020, one of my clients with a similar profile and same GMAT, got admitted to INSEAD (ISB too). To answer your "Chances" with data points, you do have high chances for ISB, though for INSEAD, a lot would depend on how your profile turns out when looked deeper.

I can understand you would have a lot more questions. Please ping on my LinkedIn, and schedule a 1:1 discussion to answer your questions and assess your profile. Apart from the 50+ public recommendations on LinkedIn, many of my clients from schools including INSEAD, Duke, Tuck etc (with profiles like yours) are wary of putting in their recommendations publicly, but happy to connect with individuals looking for advice.

Hi,
With reference to your academics, GMAT and extra curricular activities, things are quite balanced out. You have performed well at work which also adds value. The main question that you have to put into perspective is what are the transferable skills from your previous work ex and how do you plan your career post MBA? The answers to these questions should help you put the previous achievements and endeavours into context. Overall, there are strong points in your profile. If you have the post MBA plans sorted out and have prepared well for achieving those, its a go.

All the best!

Regards

Hey, Looking for some feedback on my profile:

Background:
28, Male, Indian
Education:
10th : 92 %(Maharashtra State Board)
12th : 82.8 %(CBSE)
BE : 65 % Mechanical Engineering (Pune University)
Work: Currently working in Oil PSU in Direct Sales

Work Exp:
- 9 Months in Oil Depot (Apprenticeship)
- 3 years 2 Months as Direct Sales Officer
Total: Approx 4 Years of Experience in Oil PSU

GMAT: 750 (Q51 V40 IR7)

Extracurricular and Awards/Promotions:
None.

Although I routinely conducted various Govt Initiates in my sales area such as Swacchta Pledges, Fuel Conservation Activities, Tree Plantations, Seminars for customers, etc. (Can these activities be included in EC?)

Also got a good rank in GATE exam.

Goal:
Product Management
(Is it possible to get into PM without any IT experience or background? )

Please provide feedback for my chances in ISB?

Hi phoenix2194 hope this finds you well

You have a decent profile overall with a competitive GMAT score.

On the surface, your profile looks good for ISB. I see a good balance in terms of professional trajectory, and Extra-Curricular. I would call for deliberation on your post-MBA goals. You must understand that ISB is somewhat finicky about not having the "perfect" post-MBA goals in your essay 2. You will be grilled on this during your interview. If you stand by your goals, you should show that you have done the research and connected with alumni and recruiters to draw insights on the right strategy for this transition. Also, you need to be more specific about your long-term motivation and talk about the exact problems you have seen through your experience that you wish to solve.

For example, think about why you would make a good Product Manager, and for solving what kind of problems. Did you have opportunities during your Direct Sales stint in the Oil PSU where you had to work closely with engineering teams, IT teams or technology teams? Reflect on your role as an enabler in such projects that required a solid data-oriented approach. Maybe you witnessed shortcomings in the project cycle due to improper planning or supply-demand inefficiencies. Do you see an opportunity to solve problems by topping your industry-focused sales experience with PM skills?
You also should demonstrate a growth mindset in your goals selection. You may not be able to make a direct transition into the best PM role post PGP, but if PM is your true calling you could begin by owning a small aspect of a product, eventually gaining knowledge and experience growing into more senior roles in the Product domain.

Feel free to speak should you need guidance.

Best wishes

Hi phoenix2194,

Sorry for delayed response.

For your chances of admission, if you are able to pull up a good interview, you will be through. GMAT score is excellent, overall profile is average.

About your goal, there are many candidates without any IT know-how and from PSU/govt background who migrate into Product management role post MBA. If you understand business, then understanding IT is not that tough. You will definitely require focused efforts but it is quite possible. There are many precedence of such cases.

Best wishes.

Post MBA goal: Management Consulting at MBBs or Big4

GMAT Score - 770 (Q50/V46)

Last Saturday I had my interview with ISB. Apart from a few industry specific questions, I could answer all the questions well.

This was my 3rd interview with ISB ( I got rejected twice in 2021, PGP and 2020, EEO) . Previously, I had a 720 in GMAT and couldn't make it through.

Can someone evaluate my profile and chances this year? I am willing to dropout from my current course if I get into ISB.

Thanks in advance.

Dear UtkarshBSingh,

As long as you were able to logically explain the following, I think it should be "3rd time lucky for you" :)
a. The rationale behind dropping out from your existing course considering factors including and not limited to Opportunity Cost in terms of time and money
b. The reason for persisting on a seat from ISB and how you foresee its impact on your career, which otherwise a SPIJMR MBA would not have given you

Cheers and All the best

Hi LeLazarus hope this finds you well.

As an ex-designer of processes for assembly lines in the automotive sector, I can resonate with your thoughts. However, that did not keep me from attaining admits to top B schools in India and abroad. :)

The most important aspect to show on a B School application is "career progression". How have you demonstrated an upward trajectory in the last 6.5 years? What new learnings and incremental responsibilities did you get as you worked in the O&G sector for 6.5 years? For your applications. focus on highlighting the most unique aspects to increase the odds of success. Reflect on the experiences where you took initiative to resolve conflicts within teams, motivated co-workers and subordinates to expedite projects and generated impact on business in terms of $$ through cost savings and creating process efficiencies or revenue generation.

You haven't mentioned your goals. Strategy & Ops Consulting, Supply chain design and product are some of the popular roles that are sought by people with similar experience.

Your ECs are decent but dated. I am sure there must be more below what you have mentioned at the surface level. For ECs, I recommend that you think deeper and analyze whether you have missed considering any mundane/ unobvious/ subtle initiatives you may have taken through the years (certain diversity initiatives at work, for example, raising voice against gender parity, voicing strong opinions for women's employment in the manufacturing facilities, providing financial or moral support to someone in need, teaching the underprivileged kids, organizing diversity talks or off-site activities for better collaboration among teams, and so on).

Feel free to reach out for a more detailed discussion.

Best wishes

Dear arpit121,

Below is my evaluation of your profile.

GMAT: If you can hit the 730+ mark, it will very well be above the average score.

Academics: Average; while the cumulative GPA is on the lower side, I will suggest you try to showcase some upward trend in your semester-level GPA

Work Experience: Good; Seems your role has been at the intersection of systems, processes, and operations in an industry that has seen a lot of change over the last 2-3 years due to the pandemic. This is by far the strongest aspect of your profile and you will need to come up with examples of how you were able to create tangible impact via your work, and how you got exposure to leading a group of people to achieve the impact. Showcasing subject matter expertise via references to trends, and global/local nuances will also add value to your candidature.

Extra-Curricular: Average; shows that you have good communication skills and work well in group settings.
Certifications: Unless you are able to clearly explain how these certifications have helped you do better in your job and/or will help you achieve your career goals faster, the admission committee will typically not give a lot of weightage to these online courses.

Overall, I believe that with a 710+ GMAT score and an impactful application where you mention pragmatic career goals and can illustrate how your experience and personality traits would aid in the learning and overall experience of your cohort, you stand a good chance of being shortlisted for an interview and eventually making the cut.

I am an ISB alum, CO15, and have been guiding applicants in their admission journeys for the last 6 + years. Feel free to reach out to me if you seek professional guidance.

Cheers and all the best for the GMAT and Application!

Hi arpit121 hope this finds you well

A 730+ would help you stay competitive.
As a young applicant to ISB, you need to demonstrate utmost clarity on your post-MBA goal, which you did not mention in your profile summary. You may very well expect to get grilled on this in your interview. There may as well be a case study involved during the interview based on your post-MBA interests.

Your ECs seem to be dated. But I am hopeful there would be more to your interests and hobbies than what appears on the surface. The same can be unraveled after a discussion.

Overall, a decent profile, but tying all the pieces of narrative together with strong leadership examples and clear vision for future seamlessly is important.

Feel free to reach out should you need guidance.

Best wishes

gnibha25 Hi hope this finds you well

A strong profile overall. However, I see room for improvement on GRE. Your undergrad pedigree is prestigious, and that will be an advantage.

Your professional arc over five years is not too clear to me. However, the fact that you have a good bit of international work experience does stand out. The digital marketing/performance marketing domain is somewhat differentiated. If you portray your career progression and achievements well, your marketing perf background can help you stand out in a large pool of applicants. This naturally translates into your requirement to demonstrate a solid year-on-year growth progression through various abilities and professional experiences accumulated over time. Demonstrating meticulous research on your career prospect and connecting it to your motivations will further take you closer to getting an admit.

Your ECs are decent. You should substantiate your experience setting up your family dental clinic with proof to showcase a well-rounded profile.

Feel free to reach out should you need guidance.

Best wishes

Hello!
Please evaluate my profile for ISB 2023-24

Background:
Age-24
Class X- CGPA 10
Class XII- 91.6%, commerce (CBSE)
UG- Institute of hotel management, pusa.- 76.4% aggregate
GMAT- Haven’t appeared yet(aiming to get a 700+)

Work experience:
I have a degree in hotel and hospitality administration. Professionally, I’m a pastry chef. I’m an entrepreneur. I’ve been a home baker for 3 years now. I’m a micro influencer with a following of 29k+ followers on Instagram.

I’m a baking coach apart from being a chef, have taught more than a 1000 people.

My responsibilities involve everything that falls under the umbrella of business management, from product development, marketing, client handling to delivery. And I do everything all by myself, for now.

Extracurriculars:
•I speak conversational french and spanish (b1 level in both from respective embassies)
• I was the junior captain, the vice captain and the captain of my house in school
•Participated in a plethora of literary activities like extempore, debate, plays, singing at inter-school, zonal and district level.

Interests:
•Painting, working out, food photography, learning languages
•I’m also interested in learning the piano and the guitar.

Reason for application:
I wish to open a commercial chain of my own (like theobroma from Mumbai) but I fail to possess the knowledge of the market which I feel a degree in MBA would surely help me with.

What’re my chances of getting selected at ISB? Also, what’s the bare minimum score I would need?

Hi, a few points for you:
1. GMAT- aim for a 700+ GMAT score. That's the advice i would give to every ISB applicant, but it applies a little more in your case. Bschools want to see your quantitative prowess either through your undergrad scores, GMAT or work exp. As your undergraduate degree was likely not quantitative (neither is your work exp), you would like to show the adcom that you can still perform well. GMAT can be your only opportunity to do so. The higher the GMAT, the better it would be.
2. In your application, focus upon the entrepreneurial and management aspects of your work as they are more relevant for a bschool. Also, show the quantitative achievements and the growth you have taken your business through. Past achievements are an indicator for future success, so demonstrating that you have had some level of success already will be vital for a successful application.
3. When writing entrepreneurship as a career goal, be sure to present both short term and long term goals wisely. I would brainstorm on questions like- does it make sense to gain corporate experience first before starting a venture. Basically, have well thought out short term and long term goals
4. Among your extra activities, i like the mentorship the most. Others are not so impactful.
5. A word of caution: You will have to show leadership skills, which are always in respect to other people. Saying that you single handedly managed the biz without working with others may not be so impactful. So show your client management/ vendor management and team management skills.
Hope that helps. You can reach out yo us at [email protected] for further discussion
