Length of the rope = 20.6 meters.
Assume length of longer piece = x meters.
Length of shorter piece = x - 2.8
We know that x + x - 2.8 = 20.6
2x = 23.4
Length of the longer piece = x = 11.7 meters
Correct Option: E

Let’s let x = the length of the longer piece of rope. We can create the equation:
x + x - 2.8 = 20.6
2x = 23.4
x = 11.7
Answer: E

Just divide the rope equally into 2 parts i.e. 20.6/2 = 10.3

Why would we do math when we can look at the answer choices and ballpark?
There are two segments. If they were the same length, they'd each be 10.3m. One is longer. We want the length of the longer. It has to be longer than 10.3.
A. 7.5 Nope.
B. 8.9 Nope.
C. 9.9 Nope.
D. 10.3 Nope.
E. 11.7

Non-equation method.
If you split the rope in half, it is 10.3 each
Then imagine, if you take 1.4m from one rope and attach to the other, the total still remains at 20.6.
But one rope is now 2.8m shorter than other.
How did I come up with 1.4 magic number? It is half of 2.8m !
