MIT LGO Program

Question

Hello,

The class profile page of MIT LGO program (https://lgo.mit.edu/student-life/class-profile/) says GRE quant data alone. Does this means MIT LGO takes only GRE quants score or do they have some minimum cut off for Verbal and AWA. Also, I took my GMAT and have a score of 680 (Q50, V30, IR6, AWA5). Though my GMAT score is far below than average GMAT score required for this program, I have a good Quant score. If MIT LGO takes only GRE quants, I can easily get the above average score. I was in a dilemma to take GRE or not. Please provide your inputs.

Hi J Mahesh,

It is odd as to why MIT LGO program singled out quant score of GRE. Maybe because it is analytics heavy course? As per my understanding, MIT LGO is a dual degree course. And like in any other dual degree course you need to be approved by both MIT SoE & MIT Sloan. Simply check the admissions requirement of both schools and satisfy them. I don't think that MIT LGO considers only quant score of GRE exam. You could simply ask MIT adcoms?

J Mahesh, Thank you for the post. We place applicants into LGO every year (as well as Sloan) so I can comment on this. As a school overall, MIT is a bit more focused on quant than the average school and for LGO, it is important that students have a strong analytical capability. This does not mean the verbal is ignored though. In terms of whether your profile is strong enough for LGO, feel free to email your resume so I can learn more about your background, undergrad GPA, work experience etc. My hunch is that you would want to raise your verbal to at least try to cross the threshold into the 700s but give me some more information so I can do a full analysis. scott@personalmbacoach.com www.personalmbacoach.com Best, Scott

I contacted MIT LGO admissions and I received the following reply:

Hi Mahesh,

Thanks for your email and interest in LGO. We don’t report the average verbal or writing scores for GRE, since the quant score is most important to us. Let us know if you have additional questions.

I wonder. If the challenging LGO program boasts an 80% range of 160-170 for GRE quant, does that mean a 160 is "good enough" for the regular MBA? That is assuming the applicant is a non-quant person.

You should aim to get above 165 and above 160 on verbal.

Great to know that MIT team replied to your query, however not sure if your question was specific with respect to the GMAT score your have and specifically your Quant score.

Considering MIT is Quant Heavy school, it is worth checking that out specifically. But considering they have mentioned specifically GMAT score Avg. 725 then most likely it would be challenging.
