Only engineering is capable of analyzing the nature of a machine in terms of the successful working of the whole; physics and chemistry determine the material conditions necessary for this success, but cannot express the notion of purpose. Similarly, only physiology can analyze the nature of an organism in terms of organs' roles in the body's healthy functioning. Physics and chemistry cannot ascertain by themselves any of these operational principles.

Which one of the following is an assumption required by the analogy?

(A) The functioning of the human organism is machine-like in nature.

(B) Physics and chemistry determine the material conditions required for good physiological functioning.

(C) The notion of purpose used by engineers to judge the success of machinery has an analog in organisms.

(D) Physiology as a science is largely independent of physics and chemistry.

(E) Biological processes are irreducible to mechanical or chemical processes.

Supporter Model - Assumption Question

Engineer - Capable of analysing successful working of machine
Physio - Capable of analysing successful functioning of body organs.

Ability of identifying successful functioning match.
That's the assumption.

Only C is analogous.

This is a tough one, can others chime in? The only clear outs are D and E. Negating A-C all seem plausible to me.

Similarly, only physiology can analyze the nature of an organism in terms of organs' roles in the body's healthy functioning. Physics and chemistry cannot ascertain by themselves any of these operational principles.

Which one of the following is an assumption required by the analogy?

We can think
In what case
Physics and chemistry can ascertain by themselves any of these operational principles.

given
1.physics and chemistry determine the material conditions necessary for this success, but cannot express the notion of purpose.
2.Similarly, only physiology can analyze the nature of an organism in terms of organs' roles in the body's healthy functioning similar to engineering.

If
Physics and chemistry can express the notion of purpose then the conclusion will not be true.
So assumption is
Physics and chemistry cannot express the notion of purpose .

Only Option C echo in this line of thinking.

I think it's difficult to elimate the incorrect choices for this question definitively, if you read the passage and catch the point about "the notion", only then you can answer this question correctly.

I hate it when people leave irrelevant as their poe - there is nothing irrelevant, even if it is, there is a perfect explanation as to why must we call it that.

In the A - is the second most chosen answer, simply saying that it is irrelevant would not help anyone.

Physics and chem cannot by themselves ascertain any of the operational purposes. It is similar for both.

Analog means that it is similar to something else. In this ans C has described it perfectly that The notion of purpose used by engineers to judge the success of machinery has an analog in organisms. - that's why we are also able to compare the physics and chem of these two.

if it were just A - it gives us an incomplete answer --> the functioning of human body is machine-like but in what sense? Are we able to draw the conclusion basis on this assumption - no, we can't. hence, this must be eliminated.
