Well-planned passenger-car parking can increase the use of mass transportation, reduce the number of commuters, and encourage alternative travel methods. It's important that communities invest in improvements in passenger-car parking.

The conclusion drawn above is based on the assumption that
A. Mass transportation is becoming more popular as gasoline prices continue to increase
B. Many cities that invested in new parking facilities have witnessed increased usage of mass transportation
C. There are other ways to increase the use of mass transportation , reduce the number of commuters , and encourage alternative travel methods.
D. Some fraction of the prospective increase in the use of mass transportation , and reduction of the number of commuters can be realized
E. Parking is the most critical issue for most local communities

Will go with C as the whole Assumption is based on the fact that there are ways to increase the use of mass-transportation. Feel that B is close but comparison with other cities is irrelevant.

I'll go with B. As when compared with the other options, only this seems to fit

I chose B in my first attempt, but after going through the above explanation D does makes sense.

I negated B as the question is talking about the improvement in car parking while option B talks about the new parking facilities.

I negated B as the question is talking about the improvement in car parking while option B talks about the new parking facilities.

B is a classic trap answer choice that you will find mostly in all the CRs. That the intended outcome is realized in other city with similar action plan need not necessarily be true and hence, must be avoided in almost all questions. While C weakens the conclusion, D says that the author must have thought/ assumed that any improvement in the mentioned areas are possible and can be realized by improving car parking.

Hope this helps.

Yeah C seems to be the correct answer and not D. Anybody has a better solution for D?

passenger-car ? mass transportation ?
Im such an idiot ..I had to google those terms first lol

coz X ......., so we should do Y
assumption ?
If we do Y, X will happen

what is X ?
increase the use of mass transportation, reduce the number of commuters, and encourage alternative travel methods

Only D says the same thing

Can someone explain why E is wrong? The parking is our issue.. we’re looking for an improvement in passenger car parking and since it is critical for communities they should invest in it..
thank youu

E actually is OUT OF SCOPE .
In the argument we are concerned with PASSENGER-CAR (PUBLIC TRANSPORT) and not all cars ( private+public)
so even if parking is not the MOST important issue (negation of conclusion) for most local communities then also the conclsuion stands as there may still be a need for better parking for PASSENGER-CAR and hence it may still be important to improve parking for the later.

The Conclusion is that the Community should invest in the Car Park.
This is based on the claim/data that the Car Park increases the usage of mass transit amongst other things.

This is a Defender type question(CR BIBLE terminology). Meaning that we need to make sure that the Line of Reasoning exists.

In this case this can happen only when we have made sure that this relation can happen.

Option D is the best answer for that. Only if we can realize some of the potential benefits, should we build the Car park.
On negating this option we get that after building the car park we will not get even some benefit. This breaks the conclusion. Therefore we are even more sure that this is the right option.

Is this question a bit ambiguous ? Do you think B is wrong here ? MartyMurray KarishmaB
None of the answers works very well. So, this question has no clear correct answer.

Regarding (B), it is incorrect because the argument does not assume that any city has gotten results by investing in improvements in passenger-car parking.

Rather, the conclusion is based on the stated fact that "Well-planned passenger-car parking can increase the use of mass transportation, reduce the number of commuters, and encourage alternative travel methods."

Notice that, if it's true that cities CAN increase the use of mass transportation, reduce the number of commuters, and encourage alternative travel methods by investing in improvements in passenger-car parking, then the argument works even if it's not true that many cities HAVE ALREADY GOTTEN such results using the recommended approach.
