In a recent survey, Physical Fitness Weekly found that people exercising daily consider themselves no healthier than do people exercising three to five times a week.

(A) no healthier than do people exercising
(B) not any healthier than do people exercising
(C) not any healthier than do people who exercise
(D) no healthier than are people who are exercising
(E) not as healthy as are people who exercise

MANHATTAN REVIEW OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:

One thing you have to consider in this sentence is parallel structure. Because you say ‘people exercising daily’, you have to maintain the same form later. That eliminates choices C, D and E. Choice B uses the inefficient expression ‘not any healthier’. Choice A is the correct answer.

What is 'do' referring to here?
As per my knowledge do should refer to a verb like a pronoun.
Can anyone point out where I went wrong?

Anyone please explain why the usage of "not" is not correct.

Hi Shashwatrakesh,
A pronoun never refers to a verb. It refers to its antecedent, 'a noun'.
The word do stands for 'consider themselves'.
DO is a helping verb and helping verbs can stand in for longer verbs or verb phrases.
Consider this example: I don't charge for my service but most people do. Here do stands for 'charge for their service'.

Hi jrk23.
The use of 'not' is unidiomatic when used with 'than' here.
The correct use can be understood with the example below:
His performance was no less (or 'no more') impressive than Tom's.

IMO what the word do is doing here is that it is presenting a comparison between how people who exercise daily and who exercise 3-5 times a week think about themselves. If we remove do then it would mean how people who exercise daily think about themselves and those who exercise 3-5 times a week.

Hope this helps :) :)
