Q1-
the highlighted text shows how crimes that are not serious today were considered serious in Georgian England. Hence D is the answer.

Q2-
First para-'However, although the number of crimes punishable by death increased, and more and more criminals were brought to trial, the numbers of people who were actually hanged fell. '

The next para goes on to explain why that happened.

Answer:B

Q3-
Judges did not adhere to the law on many occasions, for instance-Simple decency alone accounts for many of the instances in which the English chose not to use their lethal laws. Judges could commute the death sentence on suitably penitent felons. Juries could undervalue stolen goods so as to bilk the prosecution. (Since the law demanded that anyone who stole 40 shillings or more must hang, hundreds of theft of goods valued by the jury at 39 shillings were handed down every year for the convictions.)

Hence B is the answer.

All other options are correct as per the passage.

The author does not evaluate how effective the capital punishments were.

He simply tells the reasons that why the hangings reduced in the rest of the passage.

IF WHAT YOU SAY IN Q1 IS CORRECT, SHOULD THE ANSWER NOT BE C?

I am a bit skeptical of response D in 1. It says these would be considered minor crimes today, but posing as a gypsy doesn't seem like a crime at all. Can you please elaborate.

Hi MPRS22,

May be "posing as a gypsy" doesn't seem like crime at all, but we need to consider the information that is present in the passage, which is:
"Over 200 crimes were punishable by hanging: not only murder and kidnapping, but forgery, petty theft, and "posing as a gypsy.""

From the above lines we can infer that death penalty was applied to even minor crimes such as: "posing as a gypsy".

Hope This Helps.
Thanks.
