In some cities, many potters have been winning acclaim as artists. But since pottery must be useful, potters must exercise their craft with an eye to the practical utility of their product. For this reason, pottery is not an art.

Which of the following, is an assumption that supports drawing the conclusion above from the reason given for that conclusion?

A. Some plates, bowl and vessels are made to be placed in museums where they will not be used by anyone.
B. Some potters are more concerned than others with the practical utility of the products they produce.
C. Potters should be more concerned with the practical utility of their products than they currently are.
D. Artists are not concerned with the monetary value of their products.
E. An object is not an art object if its maker pays attention to the objects' practical utility.

ARGUMENT
[con] Pottery is not art, [prem] because potters MUST exercise their craft with an eye for their products utility.

A. irrelevant;
B. irrelevant;
C. irrelevant;
D. irrelevant;

Answer (E): if the makers of an art object pay attention to its utility, then the argument would fall; thus this is a necessary assumption.

Assumption question approach: If we negotiate the option, the conclusion of the question must be reversed

E. If we consider an object as art object if its maker pays attention to practical utility of that object, then pottery WILL be an art too (as per the question). So, the conclusion gets reversed --> Correct

IMO Option E

Out of scope
B. Some potters are more concerned than others with the practical utility of the products they produce.
We dont know if this is the situation right now.
C. Potters should be more concerned with the practical utility of their products than they currently are.
We dont know if this is the situation right now.
D. Artists are not concerned with the monetary value of their products.
Monetary value is not considered in the argument.

An art cannot be considered as art if it's makers concentrate on its practical utility...

So for that reason.... Pottery is not considered as art coz of its practical uses

E. An object is not an art object if its maker pays attention to the objects' practical utility.....correct assumption in like our prethinking...

E is my final answer since it connects the gap in premise "pottery is not an art" and "potters must exercise their craft with an eye to the practical utility of their product".

The right answer is option E in my view.

Premise: In some cities, many potters have been winning acclaim as artists.
Premise: Pottery must be useful, potters must exercise their craft with an eye to the practical utility of their product.
Conclusion: Pottery is not an art.

Answer choice A says that some plates, bowls, and vessels are made to be placed in museums where they will not be used by anyone. If this is true, it weakens the argument made above. So this not the assumption.

Option B says some potters are more concerned than others with the practical utility of the products they produce. This weakens the conclusion made in the argument rather than strengthen it. It can't be the assumption.

Option C states that Potters should be more concerned with the practical utility of their products than they currently are. This suggests that potters are currently not more concerned with the practical utility of their products. This option weakens the conclusion rather than strengthen it. It can therefore not be the assumption.

Option D is irrelevant.

Option E states that an object is not an art object if its maker pays attention to the object's practical utility. This is the correct answer as it provides the bridge between the conclusion and the premises of the argument. When we negate option E, the argument falls apart. Hence, E is an assumption on which the argument relies upon.

Tips for assumption questions: Always negate the answer options in order to get the correct answer. Try it!

The best option is E.

The argument concludes that pottery is not an art because potters must consider the practical utility of their product. If it is true that an object is not a work of art if its maker pays attention to the objects practical utility, the conclusion is supported.

NEGATION PROCESS: An object is NOT an art object if its maker pays attention to the objects' practical utility.

If option E were not true, the conclusion that pottery is not an art because pottery items have practical utility will not stand. Thus, option E is the correct option. All other options are irrelevant.

conclusion : pottery is not an art.
reason : potters must exercise their craft with an eye to the practical utility
underlying assumption : art cannot have practical utility

A. Some plates, bowl and vessels are made to be placed in museums where they will not be used by anyone.---- some plates, bowls and vessels is out of scope- wrong!
B. Some potters are more concerned than others with the practical utility of the products they produce.--- either ways all the potters in general are concerned with the practical utility therefore this option only adds to the argument however is not an assumption.- wrong!
C. Potters should be more concerned with the practical utility of their products than they currently are.---- this option does not relate pottery with art!- wrong!
D. Artists are not concerned with the monetary value of their products.---- maybe potters also do not care..irrelevant- wrong!
E. An object is not an art object if its maker pays attention to the objects' practical utility.---- exactly in line with our reasoning!- correct!

Official Explanation

Correct Answer: E

The best answer is E. The argument concludes that pottery is not an art because potters must consider the practical utility of their product. If it is true that an object is not a work of art if its maker pays attention to the objects practical utility, the conclusion is supported.

Let me break down this argument step by step.

The argument has a clear structure:
- Premise (the 'reason given'): Potters must pay attention to the practical utility of their products.
- Conclusion: Pottery is not art.

Now, notice the logical gap. The premise talks about 'practical utility,' and the conclusion talks about 'not being art.' How do we jump from one to the other? There must be a hidden link — an unstated assumption — that connects these two ideas.

Think of it like a bridge:
- Left side: Potters focus on practical utility.
- Right side: Pottery is not art.
- Bridge needed: Focusing on practical utility means something is NOT art.

That bridge is exactly what Answer E provides: 'An object is not an art object if its maker pays attention to the object's practical utility.'

With E in place, the logic becomes airtight:
1. If a maker pays attention to practical utility, the object is not art. (Assumption E)
2. Potters pay attention to practical utility. (Premise)
3. Therefore, pottery is not art. (Conclusion)

Why are the other choices wrong?
- A talks about museums — irrelevant to the argument's logic.
- B says some potters care more than others — this doesn't help the conclusion that ALL pottery isn't art.
- C says potters SHOULD care more — this is a recommendation, not a logical connector.
- D talks about monetary value — the argument is about practical utility, not money.

Key Takeaway: On assumption questions, identify the gap between the premise and conclusion. The correct answer will be the missing link that, when plugged in, makes the conclusion logically follow from the premise.
