Hello All!
With the MBA application season kicking off, I'm posting here to help out prospective MBA candidates. For the last 3 years I've been working as an admissions consultant for US and UK undergraduate and MBA programs, specifically working with applicants from India where I was based prior to my MBA.
I started consulting after my own experience using admissions consultants for my MBA application process. As an applicant from outside of the US, I was encouraged by many to use one of the prominent US consultants (I personally worked with
Stacy Blackman), the cost of which was up to $3,000 per school, or on an hourly basis over $200 an hour. While this is outrageously expensive for any applicant, for applicants from India and developing countries in particular, it can mean spending up to 6 months of salary on a consultant in addition to the other costs (GMAT, application fees, etc). On the other hand, the quality of local consultants is extremely low, with most of them having very little exposure to the US education system and even fewer having received MBAs from top institutions in the US or UK themselves.
My experience using the reputed consultant at the time was also very poor. While I paid a huge amount, what I got in return was ostensibly someone to review my essays, that's about it. As someone who had majored in English literature at a top US undergrad institution, I wasn't able to see any clear added value. But because it is a new and unfamiliar process and the consultant is the expert, I blindly took her recommendations on all aspects of my application, thinking she knew best. She did not walk through other steps of the process, timing and deadlines, schools that might fit my profile or take part in other aspects of the process at all. My colleagues applying around the same time, had similar experiences, spending huge amounts for limited interaction, and all of us quickly realized that the cost was by no means worth whatever benefit resulted. After all of this, I was rejected at the schools I applied to and with a serious dent in my bank account.
The next year, I went through a re-application process, this time relying on my own writing for the essays and speaking about my experience in a way I knew would be best received by the admissions committees but with no meaningful changes in my profile itself. The results were completely different. I received interviews at all of the schools I submitted applications for (the same as the year prior) and was admitted to all but 1 of them.
That's my story, and I hope I can help out prospects like I was have success in their application processes in a way that is significantly more affordable to them and does not break the bank. Over the past 3 years I've worked only through direct reference and with others in my network, but due to WFH this year, my capacity to take on more prospects has increased. If this is something that would be of interest for you, please feel free to message me directly, and I would be happy to speak over a free 30 minute call. And if the 30 minute call goes to 45 minutes or 60 minutes, I won't stop and cut you off either (this was my experience with multiple consultants believe it or not). Look forward to working with you!
