Quote:
The burning of fossil fuels and of tropical forests releases so much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere that a significant amount of the Sun's heat, which would ordinarily escape into space, becomes trapped.

A) which would ordinarily escape into space, becomes trapped

B) which will ordinarily escape into space, has become trapped

C) that will escape ordinarily into space, becomes trapped

D) becomes trapped that would ordinarily have escaped into space

E) has become trapped that would ordinarily escape into space

The underlined part starts after a comma, so we are looking at modifying clause here.

A - looks fine, subjunctive mood.

B - Will - future tense, rest of the sentence here is in present tense and also heat getting trapped is true in general so present tense or subjunctive is required.

C - As far as I know 'that' is a dependent pronoun can not be spliced off + that 'will' again

D - Gibberish

E - has become trapped - action completed in past and makes it gibberish again.

Answer A.

A) which would ordinarily escape into space, becomes trapped -----> Correct

B) which will ordinarily escape into space, has become trapped -----> Use of will is not proper here, use of would is recommended

C) that will escape ordinarily into space, becomes trapped --> Same as B

D) becomes trapped that would ordinarily have escaped into space---> There was a comma before the underlined part of the sentence. so we should have a modifier in the sentence modifying sun's heat delimited by comma followed by a verb for " that a significant amount of the Sun's heat". Missing verb.

E) has become trapped that would ordinarily escape into space. same as D

A) which would ordinarily escape into space, becomes trapped // seems fine

B) which will ordinarily escape into space, has become trapped // "will" is not ideal.

C) that will escape ordinarily into space, becomes trapped // "will" is not ideal. "that" is used for an essential modifier. "which" is used for a nonessential modifier. Here, the modifier is in between two commas and nonessential.

D) becomes trapped that would ordinarily have escaped into space // comma before "becomes" screws up the sentence.

E) has become trapped that would ordinarily escape into space // comma before "has become" screws up the sentence.
