MY GMAT JOURNEY FROM 540 TO 690!!!
Being a student just finishing my first semester in an undergraduate course, the decision to take the GMAT was quite a difficult decision for me considering the fact that I have quite a bit of time before I go for a master's degree. However, I was sure that I am going to go for Masters in Management and decided to start my preparation. I started in January and started solving just the official guides. It was difficult to take out time in the day to study as I had my lectures from 12:30 to 5: 30 and had to finish the society work after that. Thus, I used to wake up at 5 AM every day and try to study for at least 4 hours in the morning. It was not an easy task and there were days when I was just tired and done with life. I would get jealous of my friend, who were chilling all day long bingeing on Netflix while I was busy studying. However, I would motivate myself by saying “it's ok Sanya, apna time ayega (your time will come)” (too cliché) but it would give me the motivation to face another extremely long and grueling day.
I prepared really hard and ended up studying for the exam for like 10 hours a day during the summer break. I sat for the exam on July 1st. I was extremely anxious, nauseous and was feeling every possible feeling that day. I ended up performing extremely badly in my first attempt and ended up scoring only a 540 which is not good by any standards. Being extremely disheartened after looking at the 540 pop-up on the screen, I decided that GMAT is not meant for me and I gave up hope of ever going abroad and studying from the leading institutions in the world. After not touching books for 2 days after giving the exam, I somehow got motivated and decided to give the exam another shot.
I scheduled my exam on august 26th and got down to studying again. However, this time my approach was different. Instead of studying for 10 hours a day I would study for only 4-5 hours a day for the exam and did my college work and other extra activities like going to the gym, etc. This approach worked very well for me as I was able to study effectively and enjoy my day. After preparing and working really hard, I finally ended up scoring a 690 in my second attempt. 690 is not an excellent score but is good enough for the courses I am planning to go for.
Overall, giving the exam was a rollercoaster ride. There were some high highs (getting an amazing score in my mocks) and some low lows (when I just wanted to not study at all). But giving this exam has taught me a lot. I would like to thank my parents, friends, my GMAT coach, and the GMAT Club forum. Without all these people( and the forum), I would never have been able to get the score that I have achieved.
