On the 19th of October 2021, I had my first date with a girl named GMAT.
From the day I set my eyes on her, I started practicing pick-up lines that have had a "700 level" tag.
2.5 months into practicing those pick-up lines, she rated me 610 out of 800. She told me that I lack both language(V32) and analytical skills(Q42).
I could hardly believe the rating, my practice dates being rated 700+.Fellow Redditors helped me analyze my ESR, identify conceptual gaps and focus on the pickup lines that matter.
35 days into mastering the art of Sub-600, 600-700 pickup lines, I scored a 710 on a Virtual Date.
Jokes aside, I am happy with my improvement and I would love to contribute to this forum; a forum that not only helped me score such high marks but also imparted in me, the art of perseverance.
Not a GREAT score, but for all it's worth, I am relieved!

July, I enrolled with Sandeep Gupta's TOP GMAT, this coaching center has a bit bad reputation in this forum but the course worked well for me. Test Prep is very very SUBJECTIVE.
I rigorously followed the course, it's well structured and traditional. The course was VERY HARD for me to begin with, I couldn't actually understand 80% of the stuff in Quant. I failed miserably in practice so I enrolled with
Target Test Prep, their reviews being extremely attractive. TTP helped me cover my fundamentals, fundamentals that are BUILDING BLOCKS of a 600+ score. Gradually, my understanding of Sandeep's course improved. I enjoyed those after that.
For Verbal, I thoroughly enjoyed Sandeep's videos. His Verbal course is top-notch, HARD enough, and comprehensive, especially SC.
I also breezed through TTP Verbal Examples with a 93% Accuracy. Very Good and HARD Questions, especially CR.
Disclaimer: Repeating again, TEST Prep can be very SUBJECTIVE. Some students might get to their target score with just TOP or with just TTP. Some might not get close to their target scores with EITHER. Started with mocks and revision.
mba.com 1 - 710 Q47 V40
mba.com 2 - 740 Q48 V41
mba.com 3 - 720 Q48 V40
mba.com 4 - 690 Q45 V40
See the Quant? Abysmal, isn't it?
Come October, I went to a test center 5 hours away from my native place.
The test seemed VERY WEIRD and NOT AT ALL HARD. Result? An abysmal
610. Q42 V32. Shattered, I canceled plans to meet my friends and came back home with an earlier train.
Wrote to TOP GMAT Team and a few fellow Redditors.
In the week after my first attempt, I wrote three free mocks available online:
MGMAT 680, E-GMAT 680, Veritas 670. I understood that my test day result is NOT AT ALL representative of my ability.
Understood the most important Strategy about GMAT 700-720:
Quote:
99% Accuracy in Easy Questions, 85-90% Accuracy in Medium Questions, and 70-75% Accuracy in 700+ Questions.
IMPORTANT: What matters more is why did you miss the 1% Easy 10% Medium and 25-30% Hard Questions! Why? UNDERSTAND those.
I solved OGs/VRs/QRs from 2015-2022 for Verbal and 2020-2022 for Quants. Love you
Forum Quiz!.
BB and Developers, THANK YOU!!!Mocks 1-2 weeks before the second Attempt:
mba.com 5 - 750 Q49 V44
mba.com 6 - 750 Q49 V42
MGMAT 2: 670 Q44 V36
MGMAT 3: 650 Q41 V38
Attempted around 10 Verbal Sectional Mocks from Sandeep's Course. EXTREMELY TOUGH ones. Made from LSAT Stuff.
Averaged around 29-30 correct out of 36.
3 days ago, I attempted Veritas Mock 2 and got the exact same score as my official GMAT score. 710 49 38.
What matters?
1.
Test Prep Company mocks are HARD, without any doubt. So, if you're getting around 670-680 in
MGMAT, you can expect a 700+ in the test day, if all goes well.
2.
85-95% rated GMAT Club questions will NEVER appear on the GMAT for someone who's scoring around 720. Don't be hard on yourself if you miss MANY of these.
3.
GMAT Online is NOT hard-ER, at least I felt so.
Verbal is at par with mba.com mocks.
How can I say so?
I have always been above 40 in verbal, 44 twice. I got a 38 today because the felt
easy, despite that, I am sure I made some SILLY mistakes early, and that severely affected my Verbal score.
MISSING EASY QUESTIONS ---------- CRIME in GMAT 700+ land! - This is why people who get 750+ in mocks and ~600 in the actual test.
I believe I am a 42-44 material! :p
4.
Master RC, regardless of Topic.I am sure my score went down to 38 only and only because of
3 Science-based passages out of 4 . I was super confident about SC and CR answers but I just couldn't comprehend the Science RCs.
This is a bad habit I could not get rid of from Day 1. Science-based passages just go over my head, I barely get 50% of Inference Questions in these passages. Take it with a pinch of Salt, Tips:
1. Give the mocks and the test at a time your brain is the most active.
(Evening for me, I failed miserably the first time I attempted early in the morning. INDIAN Test Centers rarely have slots beyond 2 PM.
2.
If you feel Anxious during test/mocks:a.
Meditationb.
Propranolol 10mg-40mg(Depends on Blood Pressure) 30 mins before the test - I AM NOT A MEDICAL PRACTITIONER NEITHER AM I SUGGESTING THE TABLET. Ask your Doctor.
SUPER HELPFUL Beta-Blocker, it actually doesn't let the Adrenaline hormone reach your Brain, hence, it keeps you out of Anxiety World for about 4 hours. Try before mocks.
3.
Don't go hard on yourself.
I stopped NETFLIX altogether before my first attempt and all I thought about was GMAT. Proved to be a bad decision.
I started watching Suits from the day of my first attempt and I'm already at S7E16, Mike is leaving Harvey!

4.
Avoid Social MediaI deleted Instagram and just kept Twitter, for some un-solicited opinion on Geo-Politics!
5.
Keep At It! You'll SHINE! 7 hours before my test, I was talking to a few friends about giving up on GMAT and trying GRE instead, or, dropping MiM and targetting a few Marketing programs.
Propranolol 10mg x 2 helped me calm my nerves.
Last, but not least,
Thank you
MartyTargetTestPrep for the course and all for the help you did about the Non-Official Mocks on Reddit! xP
Thank you, Sandeep Gupta and the team for the comprehensive course!
Thank you
VeritasKarishma for your simple but effective approach to CR and Quant Questions. Veritas CR questions are CRAZY HARD.
Thank you
AjiteshArun for the explanations. Your approach is crazy smooth and your Self-Made SC Questions inspired me to make a few.
Thank you
Manhattan GMAT and Veritas Prep for the tests!
Thank you to all the moderators who work to make out test prep smooth and easy.
Thank you to all the fellow GMAT-ers who were super helpful.
I might take the test again after the Admission Season, not to score higher for admissions but to do justice to my Verbal Ability. I would love tips from Experts on how to approach Science-based passages, I am sure these are the ones I fail miserably. If not for 3 of those in the real test, I would have scored at least a V40.
I'm going to make a video on self-preparation for future test takers soon.
I'm applying to MiM programs and I would love to connect with fellow applicants.
PS: Ignore the grammatical mistakes.
Thanks and regards!
Sri!
