Hi all,

I am looking for some insight/advice regarding my decision between these two schools.

Background: I have 5+ years of work experience in the Automotive Tech industry (i.e. Software for Cars).
International (Indian) applicant. Computer Science undergrad.

Post-MBA
Primary: I am looking to go into Product Management roles at a large tech company such as Amazon, Google or Microsoft.
Secondary: I'm also interested in entrepreneurship, and I'm currently working on a FinTech idea that is in the validation stage.

Kelley: Offering scholarship of $45k/year + Insurance :: Equivalent to 85% of Tution Cost :: Remaining Cost of Attendance is $68,000

UNC Kenan-Flagler: Offering scholarship of $50k/year :: Equivalent to 75% of Tution Cost :: Remaining Cost of Attendance is $90,000

With Kelley,
Pros
+ Great Marketing School
+ Much Cheaper. Could graduate with little debt
+ Very responsive Admin, Alumni, and Current Students

Cons
- Middle of nowhere
- Slightly lower rankings (23 vs 20 for UNC Kenan-Flagler)

With Kenan-Flagler, I'm concerned about the recent debate about a lack of support for international students and poor international recruitment outcomes.
- The Research Triangle location - How helpful is this for students looking for Tech PM jobs?
- Will I have to travel a lot for networking and recruiting events because of the location? How much of a hassle will this be?

Both schools seem to be somewhat similar in terms of tech placement after graduation, so how much do overall rankings matter (Kenan-Flagler being higher in the rankings than Kelley)?

Any insight into these two programs would be much appreciated!
Hope your suggestions would help me navigate my dilemma.

Moreover, I am also Waitlisted after the interview in Round 1 at Foster. (I am trying hard to convert)

Hey man, Congratulations!
Both are great schools. It should really depend on which one you can afford easily.
Tech PM is really a booming job right now and most of the MBA colleges would have some alums working there. Networking is really a key in there.
The location shouldn't matter much but if it still bugs you, I would say reach out to alum working in tech PM roles from both schools and ask them if location or school, in that matter, matters.
Once you have that connect, I guess you would be more confident about choosing schools.
And yes, let them know about the Foster's decision as well. Mostly they would know someone from different schools as well.

Congratz on amazing feat!

Since you're after tech jobs, I suggest that you read their class profile and job reports carefully and connect with 2Y students.

UNC puts 18% of students into tech, Kelley puts 23~27% into tech.

UNC has stronger brand name and I wouldn't trade it with Kelley if I were to pursue consulting/finance even with a full ride, but your story is different.

Kelley might have a lesser brand power, but their job reports are really strong. This can be an important factor for international students who needs to secure the job right away.

You'll be happy with either school.

Firstly, congrats on the admits to two great schools.

As a Kelley student, I can add some flavor to the discussion.

Career wise:
  • While you may say that Kelley is in middle of no where, COVID has changed things for the better. Almost all companies visit the campus now (virtually) and most job fairs/networking events are also conducted virtually.
  • A lot of Kelley alums have been moving in tech recently, and so we have a good network of PMs in top tech firms.
  • For internationals, when it comes to recruitment, I have seen that past education plays a big role. Many people who got invite for Prod Management were from a CS background.
  • Most internationals in my class already have an internship (10+ going to Amazon). I myself got interview invites from many tech firms- Amazon and Google to name a few.
  • I do not see myself in a different spot than my friends who are in top10-20 schools. Maybe they have a better success rate post interviews, but I feel overall profile matters more
  • For marketing, the career services staff is supportive

Academics:
  • Great faculty and supportive staff- the GAs are always there to help
  • You get to choose from a wide range of electives and pursue your interests.
  • There is also a center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation- that you might be interested in.
  • Can combine MBA with a PM certification.

Cost of living:
  • In terms of ROI, might be a notch better than UNC- the cost of staying in Bloomington is way less. When you compare the tuition + other expenses, Kelley comes out to be less expensive.
  • Free bus service

Rankings:
  • Indiana University is well known throughout the US- which a big plus. Also, Kelley has never moved out of the top 25.
  • Kelley undergrad and direct (online program) are both well within top10 in the US

Extras:
  • College town, so people are very humble and helpful
  • Because IU is a big university, there are many events happening all throughout and various opportunities to collaborate with students from other courses.
  • Nice big campus with amazing facilities
  • IU health has been very supportive throughout COVID- free testing, free masks, and many information notices

Some negatives:
  • Kelley is renowned for CPG marketing, not so much for PM/PMM/PMT/PgM kind roles in marketing
  • Compared to big cities, Bloomington has fewer places nearby to enjoy time with friends
  • Clubs are not very active compared to other B-schools
  • For international travel to and from Bloomington- will need to go to Chicago ~5hr trip

If you need more information feel free to DM me and we can connect.

Best of luck for Foster and let us know what you finally decide.

This is an amazing quality of information. Thank you! by the way, do internationals with non-CS major(say, other engineering degrees) have trouble getting into tech PM post-MBAs?

Update:

At Foster, I was unable to convert from the Waitlist. I gave it my all. I am confident that if I had put in the same amount of effort in my actual application process, I would have been admitted to even better schools. I'm joking, of course.

When I decided to pursue an MBA in the United States, Kelley was the first school I looked into. I had an emotional attachment to the school and its vibes. I attended a lot more events at Kelley than at any other school. My interviewer was a second-year student whom I met about 4 months ago to learn more about the school. I was able to establish a personal relationship with Adcom (Jim, Janice and Gale). Their friendly demeanor was evident at all times. Even though I had a 90% scholarship at Kelley, the main reason I considered Kelley was because of the Adcom as well as the friendly Kelley students who generously helped me throughout the process.

Finally, after weighing all of the pros and cons, I decided to attend UNC Kenan-Flagler. I'm looking forward to becoming a Tar Heel soon. Go Heels!

P.S.
This was a difficult decision for me to make. This is evident from the results of the poll in this topic (at the time of writing this update) with exactly 8 votes for UNC and 8 votes for Kelley. It's a difficult situation to be in. It took me three months to finally come to a decision after being in a dilemma.

I'd be happy to help anyone in understanding more about how I came to my decision and, if they're in the same situation, how they might arrive as well.

Hey! I don't think the Foster stood the chance at all. You were choosing from a Strawberry cake and a Raspberry cake. Both are good in their own ways and you won't go wrong with either. Although UNC sends less people to tech, your desired field, UNC has stronger network and presence in general big firms that you might end up with. Now go have some fun before the school starts!

They would definitely have a one up on Kelley in terms of consulting and on campus recruiting for consulting.

P.S. You may want to send them a private message. I have not seen bbsk007 online since July. :dazed

Absolutely bb! I am here at UNC-Chapel Hill. Internship search journey was really hectic and draining this season. Would try to stay active further and help the prospective students with anything I can help with.
