I recently appeared for GMAT and got a score of 740 (97%)

Quant: 49 (73%)
Verbal: 41 (93%)
IR: 5 (47%)
AWA: 3 (4%)

During preparation, I didn't give much importance to the AWA section since I thought it wasn't essential, but I didn't expect such a low score. I wrote some valid points for the topic in 15 min and proceeded to end the exam.

I was rushing because I felt I had not done well on verbal (I couldn't attempt the last question because of time running out) and more so on IR, so my mental state was at its worst when I reached the AWA section. I just wanted to get done with it and see how badly I had done on the other sections.

I totally regret not giving enough time to it now. After reading some other posts, I'm scared that it might negatively impact my application. (My profile is also mediocre at best, I'm an Indian IT male)

My target MBA schools for USA are not in the top 10 (Questrom, Darden and a few more), but for Europe they are in the top 10 (LBS-MIM, HEC-MIM), and a few top MBA programs in Germany.

Following are my doubts:
    1. Should I apply with this score or take another attempt at GMAT to get a respectable AWA score?
    2. Should I submit for rescoring of the AWA? Are there any chances that it might help?
    3. I am also planning to appear for TOEFL soon. Will a good score in that counter any negative impact caused by the low AWA score?

Submitting for rescoring of the AWA wouldn't do any harm. If it doesn't result in an increase, I would suggest a retake if possible to increase the chances (especially at the ambitious schools such as LBS, Darden, US Top-10 etc.).

Irrespective of this, writing strong application essays can signal to the AdCom that your writing skills are intact and coherent i.e. dimensions which are being tested in the AWA. The additional/ optional essay is another opportunity to address the concern wrt this aspect.

Broadly though, all applications get evaluated holistically, so it's important to remember that aspects such as your CV (career progression), essays, motivations, scores, GPA, interviews etc. are all done well i.e. if one is below average in either of these dimensions, being above average across other dimensions helps.

1. Should I apply with this score or take another attempt at GMAT to get a respectable AWA score?

A: Apply with this score. If you have the time and energy to retake the GMAT, go for it. You have nothing to lose given the strength of your current score. The only trick will be if you do better on the AWA but lower in the Q/V sections of the GMAT. Then you will have a decision to make. If you retake it, you'll have options and avoid the "what if..."

2. Should I submit for rescoring of the AWA? Are there any chances that it might help?

A: It's doubtful it will change anything. You can suggest it, but don't count on it.

3. I am also planning to appear for TOEFL soon. Will a good score in that counter any negative impact caused by the low AWA score?

A: A "good" TOEFL does not have any impact on the AWA score. The TOEFL is more or less just "passing the bar."

Hope that helps,

740 is a commendable score overall. If you possess a strong profile and submit well-crafted applications, a moderate AWA score, especially for non-native speakers, is unlikely to pose a significant hurdle. It is improbable that it will be the sole determinant of whether you receive an interview invitation or not. Once you secure the interview invite, you'll have the opportunity to address any concerns the admissions committee may have about your AWA score or your overall communication skills.

Schools generally aim to establish a connection between your AWA score and verbal score, but they typically do not make judgments based solely on the AWA score. Their assessments would need to be reinforced by what they observe during the interview, but that only happens if they were impressed by your essays and reume.

Update: Thanks a lot to everyone who recommended a retake. I took it again just after the 16-day period, and I was able to score 770 this time.

Total: 770 (99%)
Quant: 51 (97%)
Verbal: 44 (98%)
IR: 8 (90%)
AWA: 5 (56%)

I will be able to apply much more confidently now.
